No, it would be getting him to hear the better albums first. Metal
Heart is very 80's hard rock/hair metal sounding.

Why not get some Saxon? Start with Denim and Leather. Amazing album!
Also, if you want to watch a DVD, get Metal: A headbangers Journey. The
wife watched it with me, she actually liked it, and she always shuts the
door when i turn metal on hehee

Why not get some Diamond Head too. Grab Diamond Nights to start maybe

One band that I really got into, for some strange reason, was Mercyful
Fate. they've got some pretty good licks. Into the Unknown was my
favorite.

King Diamond also has some good licks....

Warning, his vocals are very high, shreaking almost :P But the guitar
is good.

Might as well get some Overkill, if you're in the metallica mood....

Annnnndddd... why not get some Metal Church,

I don`t know anything of the initial poster but when he said he was looking
for metal bands he`s not already heard I can`t help but think he`s already
aware of stuff like Saxon and Mercyful Fate. If he hasn`t then these are
both likely to appeal although King Diamond`s vocals aren`t to everyone`s
taste. I think he needs to expand on the statement "bands I haven`t heard".

Presuming he *is* oblivious to 80`s thrash I`d recommend a ton of bands
ahead of Overkill...Testament, Exodus, Death Angel, first Sacred Reich
album, Nuclear Assault and obviously the likes of Megadeth, Anthrax and
Slayer ( surely he`s heard this trio? ).

Why not indeed? I can`t say they`re a favourite of mine but seems a good
recommendation based on the three bands he has listed.

Getcha Judas Priest CD. I'd recommend Painkiller, Screaming for Vengeance,
or Defenders of the Faith.

I *hate* that album. With a passion.

I find that Fate is one of the least accessible bands in metal. Many
people I know that can even stomach death/black metal reach for the
eject button when King Diamond starts to sing. Definitely not a good
recommendation for a "newbie" to metal, IMO.

That said, they are one of my favorite bands around.

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime, Empire
Dio - Holy Diver, Last in Line
Judas Priest - Defenders of the faith, Screaming for vengeance
Magnum - Wings of heaven, on a storyteller's night

I'd like to recommend some 'current' stuff, but the metal I listen to
are from bands that have existed since the 80's. So I'm also keeping
an eye on this thread for recommendations on newer bands.

Difficult, esp. as you don't mention which era of Metallica, and Deep
Purple isn't exactly in the same heavyness category as most Maiden and
most 'tallica.

People have already mentioned most of the currently fairly big bands
in the melodic realm: Priest, Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Nevermore.

Some of that stuff is heavier and/or faster than the average Maiden
and Purple, and some of Metallicas stuff. So it kind of depends on
whether you are thinking you are moving to the heavier edge, or want
something with a bit more hard rock component.

Here's a few other thoughts...

Bruce Dickinson's solo stuff, particularly Accident Of Birth and
Chemical Wedding.

Jorn Lande has done a million CDs as a solo artist, or established
band, or a guest. Either of his recent solo albums are a good start,
"The Duke" and "Out To Every Nation". Or one of the Masterplan CD's,
the self titled debut is a bit heavier and the 2nd album "Aeronautics"
is a bit more clean-and-polished in sound (I prefer the debut).

Dare I say it due to at least one person's predictable reaction, you
could try Dream Theater. Not one of my personal favourites but some
of their stuff is good. Try one of their older ones, "Images & Words"
or "Awake".

You could try one of Fates Warning's more commercial/listener friendly
albums, such as "Parallels" & "Inside Out".

and for something a bit different for someone like yourself who is
obviously fairly new to the metal thing, the band Nightwish (pretty
much anything except their debut "Angels Fall First" which is patchy).
