Difficult, esp. as you don't mention which era of Metallica, and Deep Purple isn't exactly in the same heavyness category as most Maiden and most 'tallica. People have already mentioned most of the currently fairly big bands in the melodic realm: Priest, Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Nevermore. Some of that stuff is heavier and/or faster than the average Maiden and Purple, and some of Metallicas stuff. So it kind of depends on whether you are thinking you are moving to the heavier edge, or want something with a bit more hard rock component. Here's a few other thoughts... Bruce Dickinson's solo stuff, particularly Accident Of Birth and Chemical Wedding. Jorn Lande has done a million CDs as a solo artist, or established band, or a guest. Either of his recent solo albums are a good start, "The Duke" and "Out To Every Nation". Or one of the Masterplan CD's, the self titled debut is a bit heavier and the 2nd album "Aeronautics" is a bit more clean-and-polished in sound (I prefer the debut). Dare I say it due to at least one person's predictable reaction, you could try Dream Theater. Not one of my personal favourites but some of their stuff is good. Try one of their older ones, "Images & Words" or "Awake". You could try one of Fates Warning's more commercial/listener friendly albums, such as "Parallels" & "Inside Out". and for something a bit different for someone like yourself who is obviously fairly new to the metal thing, the band Nightwish (pretty much anything except their debut "Angels Fall First" which is patchy).
