<<Korn will release a greatest hits album in August, bringing their deal with
Epic Records to an end. Set to return to the UK this week to perform at the
Download Festival, frontman Jonathan Davis reveals all about the band's plans
for months ahead.......
What made you decide to do a 'Greatest Hits' album?
"We're done with our record deal with Epic after we release this one and we
wanted to go off and do things our way for the next record. But, other than
that, it's about time. After 10 years and five records, there's enough material
there. This is 'Volume 1', so there'll be another one in the future. Maybe
after we've done the next five albums."
Was it difficult choosing songs for it?
"It was. I'm not going to spoil the surprise, but there are 21 tracks on there
and it's good. I love it!"
Are there any new tracks?
"We recorded two covers for it. The first is Public Enemy's 'Fight The Power',
which also features rapper Lil Jon. It's an awesome song about fighting the
establishment and it reflects what's going on in my country right now. We also
did Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall'. It's amazing."
What will happen to Korn when your record deal with Epic is up?
"We're going to do everything ourselves from now on. We plan to put things out
via different small distributors and maybe through our official website. The
record industry is a dying business, what with the internet and everything.
Labels only sign bands that give them an instant hit and there's no artist
development anymore. It's sad because record companies make money from bands
like us through our back catalogue, but new bands won't be able to do that.
They're killing themselves."
Talking of the internet, do you see downloading as a problem?
"Illegal downloading pisses me off. Why should people take my music for free
when I've worked so hard? I bust my ass and then don't see any money from it,
but it's a double edged sword. I understand that if a kid doesn't have the
money to buy an album, he'll just get it from the internet, especiallly because
CDs are so fucking expensive."
Are you looking forward to playing this weekend's Download Festival?
"It's been a while since we've been in the UK, so I can't wait. We're gonna be
going off! It's going to be all about the music. We're not bringing a big set
or all that stuff. We're just going to rock it!"
What bands are you going to be watching?
"I want to catch Metallica, Slayer and Machine Head. I'd like to see Slipknot
too, but I think Corey Taylor has a problem with us. I don't have a problem
with them, though. Maybe he'll be cool and we'll talk no shit. I'm happy to ask
him "What the fuck is your problem, why are you so pissed off?"."
What other plans have Korn got for the rest of the year?
"We'll be working on the new studio album when we finish touring this summer,
which we're going to start writing when we're in Europe. Hopefully that'll be
out next February. Me and my old lady Deven are going to shoot a porno movie,
too."
What? You're starring in a porno?
"Is that so hard to believe? I'm not fucking in it, no! We're directing it.
We're really big fans of the adult industry-Deven came from there-and we really
wanted to do something different. We don't know what it's going to be called
yet, but we start working on it soon. I'll be doing music for the soundtrack,
too. I don't care what anyone thinks, I've always been a fan of that kind of
stuff, so it'll be cool to just be a part of it."
Korn's 'Greatest Hits Vol.1' is due for release on August 30th through Epic>>
