I wondered what had happened to him as well. Some other guy posted in here
for a bit and disappeared again, can`t even remember his name now. The
group`s back down to 4 at the moment I think!

That might've been me you're referring to, or maybe not. Well as for myself
well I just got back from a well deserved holiday break, and that's what it
all boils down to really. The weather down here in Australia is great at the
moment, so I just had to head down the coast to enjoy the sun and surf for a
few weeks.

Apart from a bit of back catalogue stuff I cannot really say I've heard
anything new and great as far as metal goes over the holidays though, how
about you guys.

Shit, sort of re-discovering a love of some older bands I sort of
lost track of. Just got the Testament album The Gathering. It's plenty
heavy.
Just got the new Iced Earth, and it's worth listening to.
Other than that, I can't think of anything right away, I am sure you
probably saw my Christmas buying guide, so any band on that list is
worth looking into.
Some stuff I wasn't real sure if I would like or not, the Antidote,
by Moonspell. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this is. Quite
atmospheric, and a very dynamic album. Some parts run real low and
quiet, only to thunder into very heavy parts.
I can't say enough about Nightrage. I know the line-up was a one off
shot, and I am not real sure that they'll ever do another CD, but it's
a pretty damn good album. Very heavy, but it also has some acoustic
runs here and there, and a few bits of clean vocals mixed with very
deathy but understandable vocals.
If your listening runs towards all styles, and you like a sort of
light metal with female singing, then I have to say the band Flowing
Tears with Jade and Serpentine are nice albums.
Other female singing bands, I have to give respect to Nightwish. I
didn't expect to feel this new album (Century Child) as much as I
have. I thought it would be more like Wishmaster. Not that Wishmaster
is bad, but it's sort of "can you believe what I can do with my voice"
and the lyrics and music are not too personal. However, Century Child
has a lot more feel to it, and the lyrics and music are of a more
personal nature. And she tones down the opera singing stuff. They also
added some male vocals to give contrast.

In article <4005f70a.7369905@news.verizon.net>, banged out this...

Oh yeah, the death-metal version of Testament. Personally I didn't
really go much for that phase of theirs as I was always more of a fan of
their thrash period, you know albums like The New Order, Practice What
You Preach etc. A friend of mine has a copy of the later albums like
Demonic and The Gathering so I have heard them enough to know it ain't
my cup of tea. Of course First Strike is Deadly ain't half bad
considering that they are re-recordings of older songs. Also Steve Sousa
making a guest appearance is pretty cool especially considering that he
hadn't sang with the band in a long time (ever since the early days when
they were called Legacy in fact).

Yeah I'll probably get that one, as I feel a contractual obligation to
own all their albums (heh heh).

Hmmm too much to digest there, and not enough cash at the moment to
truly endulge myself with. I'll just have to put them on my "check them
out later" list.

......ha, ha...yes, Iīm still alive & kicking....even though itīs always hard
to get through january here in Denmark because itīs only dalight 7 hours
per day (dark when you go to work and dark when you go home) - and
everythingīs cold & grey.....maybe I should go and listen to some depressive
DOOM metal...itīl probably help ;-)

Tom, I remember that you mentioned that 12th of never & Within Temptation
wasnīt real metal etc. etc...maybe youīre right...but the reason why I
recommended those 2 was becase I got the impression that you liked the more
"quiet" and moody stuff a lot....just like you like the quiet acoustic
albums from Opeth.....

Anyway...have you listened to them more than once? (Within T. & 12th of
never)

Personnally I think that a song can be very metal-like even though it
doesnīt contain a lot of fast drums and/or guitar solos...sometimes itīs
just the mood in the song that decides (for me) if itīs metal or not.......a
quiet song can be very aggressive and "hard" - a very fast and LOUD
metal-track can be "soft" and boring compared to a STRONG and atmospheric
track which speaks to the soul on deper levels - maybe it sounds stupid,
but that what I feel when I listen to music....and Iīm NOT talking about
soft radio ballads but "slow" tracks like many or some of the songs by 12th
of never, Within Temptation, The Gathering etc. etc.....

I also remember that you guys mentioned the cult band "Fear of God" - I
actually wanted make a comment on it...but I forgot it back then......
anyway, I have the album called "Withn the veil" by Fear of God and I think
itīs superb.....just like with Anacrusis - (hey Ian, have you heard more of
it?) - itīs a mystery to me why they never
got bigger...the music is TRUE and deep in a very positive way.....not like
all the ****ing CRAP all those bloody nu-metal bands put out...I hate those
bands more and more everyday.....I always enjoy reading when you guys say
how much you dislike them......"keep up the good work" ;-)

I have a question about the forthcoming box-set by JP...What is it? - is
it a best of release? - live material or????

Good new year to all...

Anders

Yeah, they sort of turned when they did Low. I wasn't real sure I
liked the direction then, but I've been listening to several extreme
metal bands these days, and Low-Demonic-The Gathering sort of fit well into this grouping.

I have heard this has a lot better production than the Legacy had. I
believe most of the songs are from the first album, but I haven't
looked at First Strike is Still Deadly.

Which version? The 2 CD limited one, or the standard issue. The
standard issue will cost probably $5 less, depending on where you buy it.

Well, if you don't like the deathy direction that Testament has
taken of late, Nightrage might not be a good decision for you.
Nightwish, Flowing Tears and Moonspell are all not deathy. Moonspell
sort of has singing that sounds a bit like Type O Negative's Peter
Steele. However, I think the music on this is more metal. Quite
dynamic in a light sort of acoustic parts followed by thunderous heavy
metal riffs. The guy has an extreme sort of metal voice, but he also
does a deep clean vocal parts as well.

Is that why Candlemass was so popular in the area. Very doomy. It is
good to see you back around here because I did want to say a few
things about your recommends. (see below)

Yeah, I did mention that. More so with 12th of Never. It's not
really heavy at all. Although it does have some dark underlayment in
the music. It's actually pretty hard to classify.

Yeah, I have made it through them several times. 12th of Never, like
I said, isn't heavy, but it's not bad or anything. It's something I
will put in as a change of pace from something heavy, like say,
Moonspell, Nightrage and other extreme, death, thrash metal albums.
Within Temptation, however, I think the music is sort of
neo-classical metal. It never gets real thunderous, but it too makes
for a nice change of pace. I do sort of compare them somewhat to
Nightwish in some ways, but Nightwish has more thunderous and thrashy
riffs on it, as well as a more aggressive drummer.
At the same time, I did buy Flowing Tears, the Jade CD, and I think
that the sort of dark-wave metal is more to my liking. Not like Left
Hand Solution, which is very slow doom metal. FT has more upbeat
songs, but it's not hardly thrash metal or anything. It's just a real
nice album. Quite relaxing.

I think I know what you are saying. Something like the Gathering's
The Earth is my Witness, or New Moon, Different Day. Sonically,
they're not that heavy, but the atmosphere of those songs is very
majestic. I like how they start sort of low and slow and build in
intensity.
With what you said, I think you should hear the Moonspell album, the
Antidote. It might be something that you will like a lot. It's quite
dynamic, sort of light to heavy, with some songs being pretty heavy,
and others very atmospheric. These guys also understand subtle riffs,
and such. It's far better than I thought it would be with other songs
by them that I have heard.

Fear of God, that Within the Veil album has a sort of doomy metal
music background. Something along the lines of Black Sabbath, or maybe
more so like Candlemass. The second album, Toxic Voodoo, was sort of
more thrashy, and a lot less classy. It's just too bad that she had to die so young.

I am not real sure what this is going to be. Some keep saying stuff
about having a DVD of the Memphis 83 show. They want that in the box
set very badly. I think the box set will be a collection of songs off
of the remaster series, I just don't know what all will be in it.
I assume you know that the Electric Eye DVD was released recently,
with the Priest live (87) and most of their promo video's up to A
Touch Of Evil. as well as some early recordings from the BBC (the Gray
Whistle test, something like that)
So whatever is in the box-set, probably won't be any of the stuff on
the Electric Eye.

Yeah, I just got told that I have stored up too much vacation time,
something like 300 hours worth. So I will now have to begin to use it,
or lose it. So I might be posting messages all times of the day the
next several months.

Open question to the rest of the group. What do you all think of
Iced Earth's new album, if you have heard it?
