Dude, if you can't hear the obvious traces of (what would later be
considered) death metal in Slayer's first albums you should spend less
time combing your hair and listen to some metal!
Slayer's early albums, although not exactly dm, were the foundation
without which I am convinced 'death metal' would sound quite different
today.

Slayer is to dm as Metallica is to nu-metal.
