Default OK, let me get this straight...

From many of the posts I've seen in this NG, it seems that there are
quite a few people that do not like the St. Anger album. For the
record, let me say that I think it kicks ass, it's worthy of purchase,
and it's about time they grew their balls back.
I'm assuming that the people who don't like the album are the ones who
are a bit youngish, and were introduced to Metallica via the Black
album. Let me tell ya something... Back when Metallica released their
second LP-single, :Jump in The Fire", I bought it. Back then, metal
was big. I even had albums from Exodus at that time. You guys that are
bashing St. Anger are dissing Metallica because they are not playing
the over refined, studio heavy sound that has marked their albums for
oh so too long now. Finally, the true fans get something that they can
truly bang their heads to.
Metallica was formed in 1982. That's 21 years ago. So all you
young'uns who are under 30 years old and are putting down the St.
Anger album need to take a look back and see just what kind of band
you're critiquing. You may just find out that they were like this all
along, and the stuff they've been putting out the last 10 years or so
was actually alienating their core fans to begin with. Think about it.

So there.

You're right, it is time they grew their balls back, shame St Anger
isn't the album that did it. Worthy of purchase is subjective. I
purcahsed it (pre-ordered actually) on the back of the hype. Ishould've
known better, had I known before what they'd produced I would've saved
myself a tenner. I'm too old and demanding to be buying everything by a
band just to be a completist these days, and my Metallica collection has
gained nothing from my purchase of St Anger.

Presumptious statement I'm afraid, I'm 33 years old and have been a
fan since RTL. St Anger let me down in a big way. It's not even on my
rotation pile of CDs next to my stereo now.

stinky bait...

St. Anger ****s because it sounds like it was recorded
on a 4 track with Lars using garbage cans instead of
drums. James should go back to shouting - this
"singing" stuff isn't working. Long songs that wander
all over the place and are really a 4 minute song played
twice are not the stuff of masterpieces.

That said, I like both videos and some of the songs
aren't bad. But it's nowhere near MoP.

And I'm under 30... but I go back to AJFA.

Instrumentals are cool.
Guitar solos are cool.

Give the songs time to grow on you. When I first heard it, I didn't
know what the hell was going on with the tempo, and the changes in
tempo. But I gave it a chance, and now I see what they're doing. Now I
can nod my head in time to the music, even when they try and fake you
out... By the way, which album, in your opinion, helped them to grow their balls back?

Sit down alone with headphones and listen to it a few times.
Preferably when you're in the mood to hear some loud, obnoxious music.
And I mean that in a good way. If people didn't like loud, hard on the
ears music, then they would have never listened to Metallica in the
first place. I hope they continue bucking the trend.

Frantic has to grow on you. When I first listened, I wan't impressed.
Dirty Window is cool, if you like raw, abrasive guitar.
Invisible Kid starts out so so, but builds to a feverish tempo.
My World is cool, because (from what I heard) it is about James'
release from rehab, and his subsequent feelings about being able to do
what the hell he wants to do now. Not to mention the fact that the
riff is pretty good anyway.
Shoot me Again runs through my mind at various intervals throughout
the week. As does Purify.

A few days later, when I listened again, Frantic was even better. Now
that I know the song, it's one of my faves. So yeah, the album (cd,
whatever) has to grow on you. Ya gotta give it a chance.

That was the entire point. They meant for it to sound that way. I like
the hell out of that drum sound. I read somewhere that an acquaintance
of the band heard the pre-release or whatever, and he said "Sounds
good, when are you guys going to have the final cut?"
They said, "That WAS the final cut, that's it!" It's rough, raw, and
unrefined. Just like real live Metallica fans.

You're kidding, right? My guess is that all you've heard is the title
track. If so, I can understand your confusion.

They've always had long songs, and the songs on St.Anger are actually
shorter than average for Metallica. Have you ever seen 'em in concert?
Talk about long songs, geez!

Why. Given the number of decent metal releases this year, why should we
waste our time on Metallica, or to put it another way, why waste time on a
very poor album. Sounds like people are forcing themselves to like because
it is Metallica. I gave St Anger at least 6 listens and that is long enough
for me to decide if an album is worthy of further listens.

They lost their collective balls with TBA and have failed to find them since.

Did that. It was still crap.

I listen to 'loud obnoxious music' all the time, St Anger is obnoxious but
not in the way you mean.

Assumptions again. No song *has* to grow on.

Sound like you are begging us to like St Anger and give it another chance.
Face it, some people with love it, others will hate it.

GOLD.

I dont like St.anger because they've really changed their sound from
that awesome metal groove of the old days when they used to put out
such classics as Unf****ven 2, Ronnie, Fuel and 2x4. These were the
songs that Metallica built their career on and its stupid of them to
play this hardcore-thrash-death-metal that they do on St.anger, it
just doesnt make any sense. I can still remember that awesome feeling
I got when I got home from school One day and I saw that my mum had
bought me Re-load, and when I slipped it into the CD player I
understood for the first time the true meaning of METAL. THANK YOU
METALLICA....WE'LL ALWAYS HAVE THE MEMORIES (of the good old days)
