Hi,
Been outa the metal music scene for a while now and was after some
recommendations for new bands or old bands which still make good
music..

I used to listen to metallica, anthrax, slayer, sepultura etc back in
the late 80's early 90's but have been listening to general radio
stuff rather than metal..

Stuff i like at the moment is:
in flames,
opeth,
s.o.d (both the original and bigger than the devil),
the old sepultura stuff (havent heard any of the new singer stuff)
dimmu

so any good bands worth checking out which are similar to those above?
i'm not really into the death stuff..the music is cool but i havent
managed to get into the vocals. I'm also not really into the
'progressive' & or dungeons and dragons type shit..

Sepultura is still pretty great. Get the album 'Nation' if you haven't
listened to it already. Their latest album, Roorback, isn't so bad either.

I like Soulfly (with Max from Sepultura) and the new Anthrax album is
the best thing they've done in a while.

Agreed.

If he likes Dimmu, he would do well with old Emperor or Summoning (who do
everything DB do, but far better). New Sepultura is as different from their
old stuff as nu Metallica.

Man, I haven't heard S.O.D. for awhile. I remember liking "Speak English or
Die" quite a bit back in the day.

For pure modern metal, I'd recommend Nevermore (either Politics of Ecstacy,
Dreaming Neon Black -- awesome metal album! -- and Dead Heart in a Dead
World for a simpler, more hooky approach).
