Opening night setlist
Same setlist as reported from the rehearsal show, so no surprises at all.
Some comments / observations:
1. The only NEW things to look for are Sammy singing Humans Being and the
three new songs.
Everything else has been done before.
2. Nice to see Unchained in the set - the only time I ever saw VH play it
live (in person) is on the "3" tour.
I know Sam sang it a few times in the past, but I never saw it. Anyway,
Unchained is welcome in any setlist.
3. Mike's still singing Somebody Get Me A Doctor. That's great, but they
should let him sing another classic,
if Sam won't do it.
4. The selections from the Van Hagar catalog:
- Nothing from Balance? It's by far the weakest Van Hagar album, but how
about Don't Tell Me?
- Only one tune from OU812? Where's Finish What Ya Started?
- The 5150 and F.U.C.K. selections are predictable, and understandable,
if they want to focus on the hits.
5. I don't mind Jump and Panama from 1984 - those are kinda staples. (Sam
couldn't sing Hot For Teacher.)
6. The first album: I love YRGM and ATBL, but there are so many other gems
on that album. Try something
different! e.g. Runnin' With The Devil & Jamie's Cryin'....
7. Sam's doing TWO acoustic tunes now? I'd rather see the whole band play
ONE, and ONLY ONE of his
old songs. Preferably an old Montrose tune, e.g. Space Station #5 or
Rock Candy.
7. I'd love to see them do away with ALL the solos, except maybe Ed's, in
favor of more songs.
8. All in all, I'd have to agree with Sam that this is the strongest Van
Hagar setlist yet, since:
a. It's got the most DLR songs ever in a Van Hagar show
b. They ignored "3", and Balance, the band's weakest albums
c. They did a decent job covering the radio hits from the Van Hagar
catalog
d. They didn't focus too much on any one album - since they don't have a
new one out to plug.
9. I'm glad to hear reviewers who have said the band, particularly Ed, still
sounds great. Looking forward
to seeing them next week....
