Description: General Characteristics:
A California Bay Area medical research company is seeking individuals who can work independently, or as a member of a project team, in conformance with Product Development Process, Technology Development Process and Target's Quality System, develops, directs, and executes plans for successful completion of complex activities. Compiles and analyzes operational, test, and research data to establish technical specifications for designing or modifying products/processes. Reviews progress of projects against design criteria and standards; recommends appropriate revisions. Designs new products that contribute to the development of proprietary positions. Prepares reports to communicate results to technical community. Takes a leadership role in application and advancement of technologies developed. Displays significant initiative in solving complex and difficult technical problems with little support or guidance.

Job Responsibilities:
Candidate will work as an individual researcher, consistently generating and implementing innovative and unique solutions to complex technical problems. This work results in the development of new or refined products, processes, or equipment. These solutions are practical and able to be manufactured.

As a staff specialist to project teams, develops and evaluates plans and analytic problem solving criteria for a variety of projects with little, or no, day to day supervision or review. Is fully capable of implementing these solutions when called on to do so.

When internal expertise is not adequate to solve an existing problem, he/she will locate and utilize external expertise.

Assesses the feasibility and soundness of proposed engineering evaluation tests of products, or equipment when necessary data are insufficient or confirmation by testing is not advisable or practical. Where current tests and protocols are not adequate will pro-actively generate new ones or credibly justify rationale for omission of testing.

Interacts with physicians to identify needs and problems and provide timely responses. Convert needs into product concepts and functioning prototypes.

Successfully completes engineering work in one of the following: product design and development, test of materials, preparation of specifications, process study, research investigations (animal and clinical studies), and protocol and report preparation

Documents and discloses patentable new product ideas in Lab Notebook and Invention Disclosure Forms. Routinely assesses new concept and ideas for their patentablility. Assesses where openings in current patent portfolio can be filled with new concepts and pro-actively evaluates these possibilities.


Position Qualifications
Education/Experience:
BS Engineering or related discipline, plus at least eight years of directly related experience; MS/Ph.D. degree may substitute for related industry experience where applicable; or equivalent combination of education and experience required to perform at this level.
While at this level, must achieve skills and attributes described for this job.

Background/experience in the design, development and commercialization of minimally-invasive medical devices including guidewires and/or guidewire-based devices required.

Candidate must have strong oral communication skills and demonstrated aptitude in working with cross-functional team members on product development teams toward commercialization. Candidate also must have proven experience in successfully executing complex problem solving techniques related to design/technical issues.

Supervisory level:
Possibly, through team leadership; may guide assemblers or technicians

Working Conditions:
General office environment, R&D Lab, cleanroom. Some travel required.

Description: A California Bay Area based medical research company is seeking a highly trained individual to perform engineering work to develop novel, neurovascular stents. Candidate must possess strong hands-on experience with the design of nitinol stents, grafts (e.g., ePTFE ), and related processes and components.

The candidate will also provide technical leadership, develop plans and strategies to lead teams, and collaborate with physicians and cross-functional team members such as marketing, manufacturing engineering and process development engineering to develop new products. Developing internal and external networks, implementing innovative processes, and drive design and manufacturing excellence is also a strong requirement. Candidate will effectively partner with vendors to generate and assess design options.

The candidate must be able to investigate and implement technologies to support rapid prototyping and concept evaluation, optimize design selection using statistical techniques, such as DOE, and possess a proven track record in project management.


QUALIFICATIONS:

A Bachelor of Science Degree (Metallurgical and Materials, Polymer, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering) and a minimum of 8 years direct related professional experience are the qualifications for this position. An MS degree in exchange for related experience can be a viable substitute. Familiarity with R&D development cycles and manufacturing processes related to medical device a plus. QSR/GMP familiarity also a plus. CAD experience desired. Metals and polymer experience strongly preferred.
