Default Open letter to eBay Customer Service

This is an email I answered to eBay Customer Service... regarding their
'stealth' use of DoubleClick- I guess there could be other users who didn't
know about the eBay/DoubleClick connection.

__________________________________________________ _

Hello eBay Customer Support- (Olivia G.)

Yes, I'm aware that (in spite of what I was previously told) -eBay uses
DoubleClick, and I'm very disappointed that they do. Nearly every link
to -and within- eBay carries as many as 5 DoubleClick attempts to snoop on
my internet and computer activity, and somehow- I resent it. Where I would
not otherwise have a problem with 'cookies', I consider it an invasion of my
privacy that it's DoubleClick, -because of their deserved bad reputation.

It probably adds $$$ to eBay's bottom line, but DoubleClick has a bad
reputation for being a known threat to unsuspecting users, a parasite, and a
'rogue' entity that cares nothing for eBay's (or anyone's) users. For that
reason, I'm surprised and disappointed that eBay has reached the degree of
success that would cause them to ignore the welfare of their clients and
users by utilizing DoubleClick in spite of the reputation that company has.
I wonder if that success will continue as the word gets out about eBay's
relationship with DoubleClick, which, of course -it will eventually.

For myself, I have discovered that Amazon, as well as the shops and
store connections, also has an on-line auction, and while it does not have
the structure or fame that eBay currently enjoys, they do NOT employ
DoubleClick. I have been buying a considerable amount of merchandise in the
past couple of weeks from and through Amazon, primarily because of eBay's
insistence on utilizing DoubleClick. I suspect that in the future, other
eBay users will be discovering Amazon as well.

I wish you well with your continued use of DoubleClick, but I have
doubts about your perceived loyalty to the people who are responsible for
your success, -your customers. The enormity of eBay should bring with it a
larger sense of responsibility than eBay seems to have, because government
regulation grows out of situations like this one that eBay has created.

We really don't need more regulation... -or do we?

Sincere regards, Jack

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. I appreciate the opportunity to assist you
with your questions.

eBay utilizes DoubleClick, a third party ad serving technology, to serve
ads. eBay does not permit DoubleClick to collect any personal
information through the use of cookies in ads. Please visit the
DoubleClick Web site for more information about its business practices
and privacy policies.

It is my pleasure to assist you. Thank you for choosing eBay.

I think DoubleClick is one of the most notorious sites on the Internet
for violation of personal information obtained from cookie
utilization. And yes, eBay does use them for various ad presentations
on their site. What you need to do to prevent this from happening is
get a copy of SpyBot S&D (it is free). It will block DoubleClick and
all other such crap cookies and spyware from entering your computer.

You may also wish to get a copy of "Smart Popup Blocker". It is also
free, and will stop most if not all Pop-up ads from entering your
computer. Both of those programs work great together.

Make sure that you get either program from a reputable company such as
Download.com, etc. so that you will know that it has not been modified
in any way, and will not have any virus to worry about. SB
