LIFE OF NAPOLEON BUONAPARTE 1834 Sir Walter Scott/2 Bks
Location: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=6938995518 Starting Bid: $14.99 Auction Ends: Dec-11-04 16:26:07 PST Up for auction is an 1834 2 volume set of Sir Walter Scott's "The Life Of Napoleon Buonaparte Emperor Of The French. With A Preliminary View Of The French Revolution...In Two Volumes." The books measure 5.25" x 8.5", have black leather hardcovers with gilt lettering/design on the spine, were published by Exeter: J. & B. William, & are 908 total pages in length with a 64 page appendix at the end of volume two. I found the following information about the history of the biography at AddAll: "Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) first published his influential biography on Napoleon in 9 volumes, in Edinburgh, 1827. It was published, according to some, to prevent impending bankruptcy and although it succeeded in the latter goal, the work was too long to be popular (Caldwell, p.500). As a result, many abridged editions followed. The original Exeter edition was printed in 1827 and a second Exeter appeared in 1828, followed by this version (1832/not the one currently listed which may be a 4th? edition), which is probably the third printing in America of the work. Scott's biography stirred up some controversy regarding its objectivity, since it portrays Napoleon, unrelentingly, in an unfavourable light. Despite these protests, the work represents an important contemporary contribution to the study of France during the Napoleonic Era." The set is solid & in good to very good (GVG) condition with firmly attached pages, a solid spine, & fairly nice interior pages but with some foxing/yellowing/age spotting to some of the interior pages (the first few pages & last few pages are the worst while everything in between is nice), wear to the top cover edges, a little wear to the outer page edges at the top right corners, some shelf wear, some color loss to the boards, etc. Shipping is via USPS Regular Priority or Flat Rate Priority shipping if a USA shipment. To determine the shipping cost to your address, enter your zip code in the calculator at the auction site. Slower media mail shipping is also available for $3.26.
