This is a masterpiece of bygone America as seen along the ever-changing
roadside of the nation’s oldest highway, a trip to the heart of America in
the tradition of James Agee. U.S. 1 stretches from the northern roads of
Maine to the warm blue waters off Key West, Florida. Along its 2,467.7-mile
journey, U.S. 1 passes through the old faded towns of New England, shuttered
against the passage of time; through the great, decaying Eastern cities
slowly losing hope; through the farms of the old South, where sharecroppers’
shack still shimmer in waves of heat; down through Florida, the new mecca,
where America’s rich heritage and its uncertain future meet in arresting
jumble of images. Illustrated with B&W photos.
