Default How long does it take for Lupron to work?

I got the injection (7.5 mg) on Thursday and have taken one Casodex
pill each day since then, for a total of four.

So far, I've seen no side effects whatever. No hot flashes. No loss
of libido. No erectile disfunction. I did get slightly dizzy not long
after
taking the second pill, but took a half hour nap and it went away.

Have other people had no immediate effects, or am I just lucky
(or maybe unlucky if it means the drugs aren't doing what they should)?

Thanks.

Alan

Lupron takes a couple of weeks, during which you may be super horny. Maybe
Casodex works the same way.

I was on Lupron (22.5 mg every 12 weeks) and casodex (50 mg per day)
starting in October of 2002. I stayed on for about a year, stopping this
past September.

I recall side effects coming on at different times. Libido loss at about 6
to 8 weeks, night sweats (hot flashes ?) at about 8 months. The worst was
loss of energy, headaches and difficulty in sleeping which started about the
5 or 6 month time frame. All of the side effects except loss of libido were
gone after being off treatment for about 6 weeks.

I also notice I don't have the amount of strength that I had before
treatment. This is due, I am sure, to the loss of muscle mass due to Lupron
and/or casodex. This should return as I am becoming more active and
starting to exercize once again.

Thanks Steve and Robert.

I guess my exhuberation at not feeling side effects is very,
very premature.

I am continuing my full exercise program - pushups, situps
and running in hopes that I'll be able prevent the loss of
bone or muscle mass. I may even try to increase the amount
of exercise I'm doing. I'm also trying to get more calcium.

Robert,

I saw another posting that said that, although the main
effects of 22.5 mg Lupron last for three months, loss of
libido would often last six. You may be half way through
those last three months before your normal self comes
back. Don't give up hope on that one.

I'll post on my progress from time to time, maybe after my
first radiation treatment on Dec. 11.

One of my reactions to PCa has been to spend huge amounts
of time thinking about it and wanting to ask questions and talk
about it. I can do just so much of that with friends and family
before I wear them out. This support group has been a
Godsend for all that.

Thanks.

Hi Robert......

FWIW.......those are the classic signs of menopause......not that you
really want to hear that (G). Steve.......are you reading this??
(snicker)

But yes, night sweats are the counterpart of hot flashes during the
day.......and not sleeping is caused by these night sweats. Everything
you said is what my sister tells me she goes through!!

As Steve would probably say......"you are now in touch with your female
side", but at least your side effects go away when you quit the meds.

As I said in another post, I remember my Dad complaining at 82 when on
the hormones, that the men were looking at him 'real funny' when he
changed his clothes in the locker room at the curling club. He was
joking, of course......but he said he needed a bra.

Cheers.....and all the best......Heather

Dammit! And here I just thought I was immune to the side-effects. I can
get them at 8 months!?!?!?!?!? Dammit.

I've never doubted the existence of the side effects. I just found that
when I get in touch with my feminine side, I still don't sweat the hot
flashes, get hot over the night sweats, or cry out in pain when I break a
nail.

ROFL!!! I don't sweat 'em either. But I do get some p*ssed when I
break a nail!! Mine are 'home grown', not acrylics. But Crazy Glue
works.

Fantastic, Dan. Now we're looking at thousandths of a nanogram!?

So, you're in agreement that hot flashes are highly over rated. Should we
too consider that the pain continuum might also be errantly reported?
Perhaps childbirth ought to be dropped below earache, ankle sprain, softball
to the testicles, hemmoroids, and pulled muscle.

I think Tom Weiner last week, mentioned that at Walter Reed the
"undetectable" score is <0.002 ng/ml - and I'm making progress!

I never meant to imply that hot flashes are over rated - they are a huge
inconvenience - disrupting sleep about every two hours, hit during the
day a little more frequently. The nurse at yesdterday's chemo session
said they are having some success with a mild anti-depressant for some
women, reducing the frequency of flashes - but she didn't offer me any.
If they continue at the current frequency, I will ask next time - TWO
years of these - I sure hope not.

But I'd rather live with hot flashes than the alternative, don't ya know!

As far as the pain of childbirth, it has been mentioned somewhere that
if men gave birth the human race would be extinct.

As far as that list goes for the ordering of pain - maybe if you managed
to get all those simultaneously....

Wishing evryone a long life of undectables.
