Default Lingering Symptom

Had RRP August 1, 2003 and am progressing reasonably well. I do have
an unanticipated concern. From the beginning I had an occasional a low
grade ache at the lower right side of the incision. This ache has
continued and is observed when standing for an extended time. It is
not sore to the touch and feels better when I push firmly in the area.
At times I can feel a slight bulge that is eliminated after pushing
the spot. I believe this may be a small hernia related to the surgery.
Has anyone experienced this? If so, was it a hernia and how was it
resolved?

I am trying to remember... I do recall having something at a similar
time after surgery that made me wonder about a hernia, and I e-mailed my
surgeon about it. Hmmm. I can't find that e-mail just now, but I
don't think the symptoms were exactly what you're describing. But I
was thinking hernia. The surgeon took my concern seriously enough to
give me a quick check at my next visit, and said no you don't have a
hernia.

Well, yes, I do remember that it felt better when I pushed on the area.
I think it had been bothering me for a while, and when I finally got up
enough nerve to ask the surgeon about it, it naturally went away on its
own. But the surgeon checked anyway.

Steve:
I think you had better call TP on this. It sounds like a hernia.
My guess is that it will require surgery to make the repair. I'd get
that looked at right away.
This week on Thursday I have an appointment to see him. My
incontinence showed some improvement sitting, but I still leak like
crazy standing/stooping/lifting. I also had some symptoms
remininscent of BPH like feeling like I have to go and there is
nothing there, etc. I may have a scope procedure in my future.
Hope it turns out to be nothing to worry about. Let us know how
you make out.
Thank you.

Steve M.

It definitely is a hernia. The pushing in on the bulge is the key symptom.
I've had both the inguinal and umbilical hernia. The inguinal is lower down,
either to the left or right as you describe. The umbilical is obviously up
by the navel.

In fact with my recent RRP I also had my umbilical hernia repeared. I
basically got a 2 for 1 surgery. I knew going into the operation I had an
umbilical hernia. I figured while my Uro was in there, lets do both.
Otherwise I wasn't going to have a special surgery just for the hernia.

So I asked my Uro to see if he would be willing to do it. He had no problem
doing it, I just had to sign the form before going into surgery that he was
doing the RRP and hernia.

The hernia operation just added an extra 1 to 2 inch scar (my scars are
starting adding up).

If it is a hernia - it is something you should not mess around with and
ignore. Go to the doc! It's a simple surgery to repair most hernias and a
real big problem if something falls into the "hole" and strangulates.
