There is a ton of information in this group; so much so that I am
unable to find the information I'm looking for. The situation is that
my husband was diangosed with prostate cancer. His PSA seems to be too
high for his biopsy results. The biopsy was excrutiating and his
prostate still hurts a week later. (This pain is not normal for most
people. Could it be a sign of inflammation or infection?) The uro
did not do any tests to rule out prostatitis. I am thinking if he has
both, we ought to identify and treat the prostatitis, then we will be
in a better position to assess and treat the cancer. If half of his
PSA score is from cancer and half from prostatitis, we need to know
that. I would be very happy for regular responses, or just links to
information.

How do you test for prostatitis? I gather STD tests are a start.

What is a good approach to antibiotic therapy? I read somewhere that
doctors use the wrong antibiotics and also don't use them long enough,
also don't treat the partner. We need a way to assess the doctor's
(when we find one) approach to antibiotics.

Which antibiotics are good, and bad? I realize that is the doctor's
decision, but if "X" is known to be of no use for prostatitis, and the
doctor prescribes it, then that will tell us something. Research links
for this question would be good, because we may want to take this info
to the doctor.

How long is a good trial of antibiotics? 10 days? One month? Two
months? Does a good doctor change antibiotics after a certain amount
of time if there is no response?

Is it standard to treat the partner? What can you tell me about that?

if he has accute prostatitis
500 mg of cipro 2 times a day for 14 days
should work wonders for him.
if he has chronic prostatitis then that is another
story.
where is his pain at?
his nuts?
his groin?
his rectum?
his lower back?
if it doesn't improve after 14 days then you need to back up and
regroup.

I am pretty sure he does not have acute prostatitis, since he has no
fever, normal WBC. The pain is in his prostate, since the biopsy.
Although I do not believe he is a good reporter of pain, and I suspect
he denies having pain when he actually does. Tells himself it is
nothing, or getting old, or whatever. So it is hard to say.

Since there is no indication of acute prostatitis, it is the other
story I am interested in.

prostate cancer is not usually painful.
most of the time the patient is not even aware of it.
if he has got what most of us in this group have then may the
lord have mercy on his soul.
most of us have found ways of dealing with our condition and
have never had much help from the medical field.
if you read my previous post on "what i have to do every day" then you
will
know what he is up against.
it may or may not work for him.
abx's probably will not help him, although they may temporarily
help,they just
make things worse in the long run.
the dr. may have hurt something in the biopsy or he has had the
condition
for a long time and it just flared up after the biopsy.
