Advice for VME
I am a 24-year old female, and am looking for some advice. Looking on
the web, I've discovered that I might have vertical maxillary excess. I have a gummy smile - about half of my smile are gums, a long face, and lip incompetence. I have to make an effort to close my lips, otherwise, my two front teeth are in full view (looks like buck teeth, actually, even though it's only slightly in front of the rest of my teeth). It doesn't look as severe as the cases on the net (though they're probably extreme cases). Maybe it's just me, but I really don't come across that many people who have lip incompetence, and I just don't feel very attractive with it so I'm always conscious of forcing my lips together 24/7. I was wondering how common this condition and its treatment is. Do most people just leave it alone or am I just being excessively vain? My parents are absolutely adamantly against it (Upper jaw surgery does sound quite scary)and I've already had braces in high school. Most of all, I'm worried about cost! It sounds like a very expensive and long treatment! Any advice or answers would be greatly appreciated. |

Gingivectomy or gingivectomy coupled with "osseous" crown lengthening.

I would recommend speaking with an orthodontist to evaluate you. Your
descriptions do sound like VME that is often treated with an upper jaw procedure, not gingivectomy & crown lengthening. If this is of great concern follow through with an evaluation. I vote for Dr. Kings assessment and recommendation.
Very doubtful that gingivectomy and crown lengthening would result in an esthetic appearance. Plus, I abhor removing healthy periodontium. WB |
