Default Alternatives to crowns/bridges?

Are there any alternatives to replacing a tooth, other than
crowns/fixed bridges or implants? (Implants are out due to lack of
bone in that area....upper jaw).

To replace this one tooth it will be necessary to grind down and crown
my canine tooth, which has no fillings, and I'm nervous about doing
that.

For cosmetic purposes I really do want to replace this broken down
tooth with something. It's too far gone to do a root canal and crown,
and must be extracted.

Am I right in assuing that grinding/crowning this canine will likely
shorten its life?

As always, thanks very much for your opinions.

Take a look at the Monodont (eastflex.com seems to be down):

I had a look, but I don't understand what holds the Monodont to the
adjacent teeth?

How does it hold up to the stresses of chewing?

There are small notches drilled on the chewing surfaces of the teeth
adjacent to the missing tooth. Wings sticking out of each side of the
false tooth are bonded into the notches.
I don't know how well they hold up long term. Maybe others have
experience using them and can say how well they hold up.
