1) food debris 2) improper flossing 3) poor brushing 4) tartar build up 5) poorly contoured restorations 6) diabetic conditions 7) trauma 8) Vitamin deficiency 9) tumor 10) Abscess 11) many other things Treatment for much this list is a thorough cleaning and good instructions on home care. It might require a physician referral or an OMFS referral. Perhaps you need root canal therapy.
