Monday last, I had two wisdom and a 12 yr. molar (part. bony, compl.
bony, and comp. bony, all impacted) removed from my left side. I had
the same procedure done when I was 16 yrs. old on the right side (I'm
now 27). I recall that the first time, I was in bad shape for a good
2+ weeks with pain and swelling. It is now just about 49 hours since
I had this work done and I don't feel bad at all. They gave me
dexamethasone which ran out last night, Perc. and 600mg Ibuprofen. Am
I just lucky, am I still in for it, or has the work changed that much
in the last 11 yrs. that makes it much more conducive to recovery?
Prior to this, my surgeon said I would be out of work for 5 days and
because of the difficulty of the procedure, it would be "a week of
hell". Any thoughts from the experts? I thought that 48-72 hrs were
the peak of pain and swelling but nothing yet.

Dexamethazone is a wonderful adjunct to surgery.

I think you are good to go. Still may get a dry socket
but that is doubtful.

Thanks for the reply WB. I guess Dexa really does help. I wonder if
I could get a refill of the stuff just in case or can the human body
only take so much of it? I'm a musician, not a doctor so I don't
know. As far as dry socket, my post op paperwork said not to smoke
for 24 hours, which I didn't, and no straws either so hopefully I'll
be alright. It takes six days for that to show, right? Last thing, I
woke up today from a nap and noticed about six blackish red spots on
the inside of my cheek and on my teeth. This would just be regular
blood spotting right? I hope it wasn't the clot, but I figure the
clot would just be gone without me seeing any trace of it.

One round of Dex is sufficient, it has already done its job in fact.
Short term usage has no real downside, long term usage can
cause adrenal suppression.

My experience says dry socket usually presents on the third
day after surgery most of the time.

A bit of spotting is not unusual and you would know if the
clot was lost. Symptoms of dry socket (alveolar alveolitis)
are foul taste and/or smell, and pain meds don't usually
provided relief. We don't know what causes it but the
clot breaks down in the socket, I do not think that you
would see it.

I think that you will be fine.
