Default porcelain veneers irritating my gums

Hi,

About 4 years ago I had several teeth veneered and capped because of
discoloration to my teeth from taking tetracycline as a child.

Since then, my gums around the edges of my teeth have never been
tight, like the rest of my mouth where no veneers and caps are placed.
So the gums are slightly swollen and bleed many times during my
flossing.

It's annoying cause I brush my teeth and gums 3x a day, and floss
twice. I even gargle a 50/50 mixture of Listerine and hydrogen
peroxide 2x a day and take my vitamins and extra C just for good
measure.

I went to a dentist several months ago and he said that it sounds like
my gums are being irritated my the porcelain veneers and caps and that
what he could do is to sort of cut away the gum from the porcelains so
they wouldn't be rubbing and causing this inflammation.

Does this sound like the right thing to do, and if not, what should I
do?

Thank you,
Sean

Sean,

Get an appointment with a periodontist and see if there is a simpler
approach available to you. The crowns and veneers may be too bulbous, in
which case they need to be replaced. Your home care may be perfect
elsewhere, but lacking in this region. You may have hyperplastic gum
tissue. It may be something else entirely.

Good advice. So a peridontist, as opposed to someone in general dentistry?

You mentioned that the crowns/veneers may be too bulbous and that I may have
hyperplastic gum tissue. Well the crowns/veneers are definately larger than
my original teeth and my gums were pushed up higher with these new crowns. So
basically I used to have smaller teeth and showed more gums, now the opposite
is true, despite the fact that my smile looks nice. This all leads to me
wondering if I just have now excessive gum material that needs trimmed?

regards,
sean

Can't say with seeing you in person. Get the second opinion.

Try getting a cleaning first. you may just have some subgingival calculus.
The margins can be evaluated at that time.

35 years old. And by the way, I got a check up back in March.
In addition, I've had my teeth first veneered in 1985, so this latest redo
took place in 1999. And, again, it's not much noticeable except by me and the
dentist and the bleeding situation during flossing. So I'm hoping this is
something that can be easily cured without riping my mouth all up again. It's
very frustrating.

thanks,
sean
