Default Post Root Canal Pain

Hi;

Three months ago my dentist started root canal treatment on my last
upper molar. During the first visit my dentist cleaned out the canals
placed a temporary medicated filling and prescribed an antibiotic.

Initially I had what felt like twinges of electricity in the tooth but
that soon passed. Unfortunately, I was not able to get back to my
dentist for over a month and by that time, the tooth started to become
sensitive to pressure such as from pushing on it with my finger.

I finally made it back to my dentist and he finished cleaning out the
canals. Right before he was done filing(as in file) the last canal, I
could feel the file and there was a twinge of pain (the tooth was
anesthetized). He then filled the canals and placed a temp filling.

After the anesthetic wore off, the tooth felt bruised when I would
push on it. This type of pain persisted for two weeks and I went back
to my dentist. He x-rayed it and said it looks fine(no infection &
tooth is not cracked). He prescribed an antibiotic just in case. The
antibiotic did not help. Two more weeks have passed and the pain has
decreased, however, when I push on the tooth, it feels funny. I was
eating an almond and chewed it with the tooth and suddenly I got
moderate pain in it. The pain lasted for the rest of the night.
Flossing seemed to help a bit. By morning, the pain decreased and some
further flossing took the pain away. WEIRD!

At times the pain feels like it is coming from my gums between the
teeth other times it feels like the tooth. Is it possible that he
didn't get all of the nerve in one of the canals? Is it possible I
waited too long between visits and now the tooth is bad?

Any ideas?

Thanks
Ed

You may have cracked the tooth, you may have some inflammation under the
root, the RCT may be especially difficult, You may have clenched on that
tooth all night while sleeping, you may be packing food debris next to the
tooth, or any number of other possibilities. Have your dentist re-evaluate
it.

I'm no dentist but I have had experience with weird feeling teeth
after a root canal. I had an apicoectomy on my front tooth 23 years
ago. This is a root canal where the cut the gum nera the root and go
in and sort of remove the tip of the root and fill it with and amalgm
(retrograde filling) Not all are done this way. Anyway, here is is 23
years later and I had a new cap put on that "dead" tooth. I get the
same feeling that you describe. Maybe my tooth is cracked? Not sure
yet.
I called the endontist and they wanted me to ask my dentist to
"adjust" the crown because I shouldn't get feeling in that tooth.

I do remember over the years that this tooth has given my weird
sensations (sometimes down right uncomfortable)
I think Dr Steve is right. You should go get it checked out, just a s
I am.
