A study showed that the number of surgeries performed per capita was
proportional to the number of surgeons per capita - even in adjacent counties with the same socio-economic class. That's scary! I have no quarrel that bypass surgery can improve the quality of life in appropiate cases. It just seems to me that drug and diet therapy should be given a chance to reverse the blockages before spending $100,000 plus on dangerous surgery that can also result in brain damage. Apparently 39% of patients can reverse blockage "In the FATS trial, 39% of patients taking niacin and colestipol experienced disease regression compared with 11% of patients in the conventional therapy group" http://www.niaspan.com/templates/hcp.asp?class=2&page=2 Also there's the hope that the "liquid drano" will pan out which may make disease regression routine. |
