Default Had my consult today (endoscopy anxiety throat)

So my doctor's been in practice for 8 years, but only been performing
them himself for 3. Not sure if that's bad or good. If he's still
experienced enough, etc. Just don't know. He seemed very
nice and knowledgeable. As far as relaxing me goes, this is the only
point I'm a little concerned about. I've had an endoscopy in the past
and although I was told I wouldn't remember it with the Versed, I
distinctly remember the whole thing, even the feeling of the tube in
my throat. That ****ed. I'm already on Klonopin for anxiety. So while
I don't have any anxiety right now. And he cleared up that I'm not a
go (even though I asked earlier about being a little sneezy, etc.)
for now, I'm hoping the Valium he gives (I think like 5 mg, does that
sound right?) is enough. The Versed underperformed for the endoscopy.
And I already take a Benzodiazapene class medication (similar to
Valium) in the Klonopin. So I hope the Valium works well enough.

Default Had my consult today (down)

Even if it doesn't, and you're extremely anxious right up to the last
minute, you will calm down as soon as they get started.

Once the shot is in, it's basically over.

That makes me feel better. Although the pain of the shot is one of the
parts I'm most worried about. That and how to make the shaving go
smoothly.

Default Had my consult today (scrotum)

Trust me, the shot is the tiniest little sting, and it lasts for maybe
3 seconds. I personally think it hurt less than having blood drawn.
When he got ready to give me the second shot, he told me that many
people complain that the second one is more painful than the first.
But I didn't even feel it.

Are they letting you shave yourself? If so, read the other threads
about the battery-operated Mach 3. It worked great for me.

I sat on the edge of the bathtub and lathered up.
Things weren't going well. Then I had an idea. I splashed some cold
water on the scrotum, and that made it shrink up immediately. Then I
had a much easier surface to work with.

I went over it about 5 times just to be absolutely sure. No snags or
cuts...those vibrating blades just glide.

So when is your appointment?

Good luck!

Default Had my consult today (urology)

Yes, self-shave *shiver*. Wouldn't the battery-operated Mach 3 be
dangerous? I've never used one, but it seems dangerous.

I already had this idea. I thought about the shrinkage and how in this
case shrinkage would be a good thing.

Really? Huh. Wonder if I should do a trial run sooner than the night
before or if that would be too much for my poor package to take.

It's Friday. Assuming I don't go in and feel like the Valium is doing
nothing for me. The doctor says this does happen sometimes, in which
case they reschedule and you go to the hospital operating room for the
procedure, not the office of this urology clinic.

Default Had my consult today (vasectomy)

No, not at all. It's a "micro" vibration. I just did it again,
literally not 5 minutes ago. Just a thin coat of Barbasol, and a
simple glide over the balls. It's a beautiful thing. My wife
inspected and LOVES it. I use the same blade on her.

No, no, no. Take some deep breaths. Be as scared as you want going
in, but don't cancel or reschedule. I'm pretty sure that if you go
with anaesthesia, you will have to pay for it, and it could cost
$1500.

I promise you, Friday night you will be posting to us about how easy
it was.

Have you ever gotten into the car, and the seam of your jeans caught
your testicle a certain way, and it made you cringe and wince? That
was worse than your vasectomy will be.

Oh, by the way, you mentioned Versed. This is amazing stuff. My best
friend is an oral surgeon. He knew how anxious I was going in. He
never had a vasectomy. Even he agreed that for such a sensitive area,
why can't they give us Versed, and just let us get through it?

Well, the answer is: once you go through it, you realize. It's so
trivial, that Versed would be silly! I had Versed with my carpal
tunnel surgery. But the vasectomy is so fast, and the novacaine
literally kills everything, instantly.

You're going to be fine.

You may have trouble pretending to be in enough pain to get your SO to
lavish you with attention on Saturday.

And remember, frozen peas and jock strap.

I do understand this fear - I hate pain! The idea and anticipation of a
needle stick anywhere is a little uncomfortable to think about. But
he's right: it's nothing, and I've done it twice (four needle sticks)!
I felt it, yeah, and it stung a little - and I do mean A LITTLE. It was
like, oh, ok, I felt that. But believe me, I'd rather do that again
that cut myself cutting vegetables! And yes, giving blood is worse too.
And once the little stings were done (a few seconds), I felt nothing,
really.

And the dentist comparrison: completely true. I'd rather get another
vasectomy than another filling.

I've never used it, but I suspect those vibrations cause the blades to
saw through hair quite effortlessly without pulling - interesting idea.
Dangerous? Hey, any blade is dangerous if used wrongly - just be
careful as you would with any sharp blade.

Why not try? It might put you more at ease.

My advice is to go in there and be strong. I am willing to bet your
anticipation is 10 times worse than it will be. I bet you will walk out
of there saying, wow, what a relief, what was I worried about? I want
to do it again (well, maybe not quite)!

Default Had my consult today (depression down diazepam)

Preston:

Good luck on Friday and congratulations for doing your research. It's
fine to be a little nervous; your doctor should help you through that.
I agree with the others, Versed is likely overkill. It's also
associated with respiratory depression as it slows everything down,
unlike the diazepam products such as Valium. I did not take any of
them. My doctor (who happens to be a neighbor and goes to my same
church with his wife and family) said that if I chose not to, I could
drive myself home. He was right. Little nervous going in, not bad
during.

As for the shaving - Mach 3 all the way. I've been shaving the boys
for years and started using the Mach 3 when it came out. My wife is a
big, big fan of the shaving. You may even consider it after you try it.
Did I say she was a big fan? First few times were a little tricky, so
see if you can sneak in a practice run before Friday morning. If it's
not done well enough, the doc will do it.

My last suggestion, take it easy all weekend. I mean rent some movies,
sit back and don't do anything. Wear tight fitting briefs or jock
strap.

Good luck and let us know how it went.

Default Had my consult today (bacteria)

Interesting thing about the shaving. My oral surgeon friend is also a
maxillofacial surgeon. He can't believe they have us shave. He says
it is a totally outdated practice, and that basically only urologists
have patients shave.

He says that shaving creates tiny micro-cuts that are a haven for
bacteria and infection.

He doesn't even shave a person's head anymore when working on the
scalp.

Oh, well. It introduced me to the joys of smooth balls, so I guess
it's okay.
