Default Morning headache when sleep in late (headache)

When I sleep in late on the weekends, I frequently wake up with a
headache which lasts most of the day. Normally, I wake up early, 5:30
or so for work and go to bed around 10:30. This has been happening
the last couple years.

My body seems to need the extra sleep but I end up with a headache.
I'm guessing this is my body changing due to age. Has anyone else run
into anything similar. I'm an average, healthy 27 year old male.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Scott..

This is a HUGE trigger for me and has been since I was a ****ager (long time
ago). I've learned to wake up at a reasonable hour and not lally-gag
(there's a old word for ya!). I'm sure you'll hear from a lot more of us
about this one!

A lot of people with headache problems get that. It's important to keep
regular hours, so if you need more sleep you have to adjust your daily
schedule to accomodate that and not try to catch up on the weekends.

The list of possible causes for headaches is as long as your arm.
If you're only getting these headaches after periods of sleep, the
causes range from carbon monoxide (gas heater with inadequate
ventilation in your home), to dust mites, to a poor mattress that
doesn't properly support your neck, back, shoulders and hips,
or a pillow that's either too thin or too thick. There are another
dozen or so possibilities, but those are the most common. If
you have a gas heater try leaving one or two windows cracked
during the night and see if the problem goes away, or if your
mattress is old, buy a new one.

Default Morning headache when sleep in late (headache migraine)

An absolute classic among migraine triggers.
Thou shalt NOT sleep late on weekends.
A damn shame, isn't it. I'm sorry you had to hear it here.

Used to get the same thing myself. I found the ideal cure though!
a baby (now a four year old) who likes to rise early every morning no
matter what the day of the week.

One of the simplest causes for that symptom:

delayed coffee (caffeine) intake

If you normally have coffee at 5:30, your body will want it on the
weekends at the same time. (similarly, breakfast can be a crucial
item to eat at the same time 7 days a week.)

Default Morning headache when sleep in late (headache migraine down)

You will probably get quite a few responses from people who have this
occur. Hubby's uncle always had a headache if he slept past 6 am.

Keeping regular schedules is important. Another possibility is that on
weekdays you may have a coffee when you get up. Some people find they
need that coffee at the same time each day. Try getting up, having
some caffeine and then lying back down. It may mean your body needs to
get up at the regular hour but it could mean it needs caffeine. Some
people find staying up late the night before may be a trigger too.

Coffee doesn't prevent me from sleeping but it does affect others. I
also use caffeine to assist me when I feel a migraine coming on. It
also can help speed meds into the system. Caffeine may be atrigger for
some people though.

And if you tend to get headaches from an empty headache, just have your
regular breakfast and then get back to bed. It's got a certain charm,
especially when there's someone there to keep your bed warm

Duh, it's still early I guess? That should have been 'And if you tend to
get headaches from an empty stomach', of course.
