Flonase --side effects? (Thanks for the advice--new ET question) (diet allergies throat nasal sinus infection)
Thanks for all the advice. The reason I first thought Flonase could
cause weight gain, etc..--was from this girl's website (she was taking
Flovent, the inhaled steroid)
http://www.killerbytes.com/ann/cushings.html
Anyway, my experience is that I've had euch. tube dysfunction problems
for over 1.5 years now. I finally saw an ENT about a year ago and was
told to try Sudafed. Sudafed didn't really help and made me really
nervous. I also tried Guafen but that didn't really do much either.
The popping grew worse (mostly left ear, but sometimes both) and I
started having face pain, clogged head and ear, just overall feeling
tired/drained and crazy from what felt like nonstop popping. My
hearing tested fine and the other test (tympo something or other where
they test the air pressure) didn't come out too abnormal. ENT then
gave me Flonase, which as I mentioned *might* have helped cause weight
gain. It did dry me out, but the popping never totally stopped. ENT
said if Flonase didn't work, we'd try an oral steroid (which I
obviously don't want to do since I already have weight to lose), then
perhaps antibiotics, then maybe even a tube in the ear. Somedays the
popping/pain/clogging would be very bad, other days manageable. Most
days bad though and annoying as heck. Made me just feel out of
control and depressed.
A few months ago I stopped taking the Flonase, even though ENT said
over the phone that it was unlikely it caused the weight gain.
General doctor prescribed me Allegra, said this could be
allergies/post-nasal drip. I have had sinus/cold-symptons the last
few months, but I thought that was just seasonal allergies since I had
move to a new part of the country. I didn't notice Allegra helping,
but I didn't take it for more than a week or two.
Then, about two weeks ago, I flew back home. I had been having
HORRIBLE painful drainage in my throat every morning on the right side
(not the main poppping ear) which would last to mid-day or so. Along
with this, sneezing, clogged nose, etc. I thought this was again just
seasonal allergies or something, but it just wouldn't go away. I got
really sick the first few days of my trip, like unable to leave bed,
just totally clogged up sinuses. I went to an acute care clinic, and
they prescribed me anitbiotics (10 days of amoxicillian), saying I
probably had a sinus infection. Mind you, I had not taken any
antibiotics for about 2-3 years. I mentioned the ear popping in the
other ear, but I don't think that's why she prescribed it. Well, the
infection or whatever it was cleared up immmediately and the ear
popping reduced dramatically. It was like a miracle. It's come back
just a little bit, so I wonder if I should go to the doctor and tell
them I might need to be on antibiotics for a longer time period, to
maybe totally help kill whatever infection may be causing the popping?
I will be seeing my general doctor tommorrow (ENT is booked full for
2-3 months).
Also, I might be able to switch to a different ENT. I think I'd like
to because the ENT I have seems kinda young and inexperienced with ET
matters. I mean, is that a common problem? From what I've read on the
web, many ENT's only see it in children. Should I try (and how can I
try) to find a new ENT that knows alot about ET? If I have to get the
tube I will, I've suffered long enough and have to believe there's
some cure. Some have said it goes away with time, I'm just hoping
that's the case for me.
Thanks for reading this long message. Any advice/thoughts/links to ET
pages would be greatly appreciated. I've read eliminating certain
food products can help, like doing a low-carb/no-dairy diet etc.
Would love to learn more about that.
Thanks so much!
