Default gynecomastia and medications

My husband is exhibiting symptoms of gynecomastia. He is in his 70s.
His breasts are tender and swollen as are his under arms.

He takes 2000 mg daily of Niacin, 5 mg or Zocor and 5 mg of Norvasc.
He also takes Coumadin, Tenormin, b6, b12 and folic acid.

It was suggested by the doctor that he try stopping the Niacin. He
did that two days ago but so far no change.

How long before he should expect to see an improvement if the Niacin
is the culprit? What about the other drugs? How likely is it that
one of them is causing the problem?

I think its the Norvasc(amlodipine), for what its worth. I don't really
have a clue how long it would take for it to clear up, but I wouldn't
expect changes in a couple of days.

Several cases of gynecomastia have been reported involving male patients
taking Norvasc. After the drug was discontinued, sympotoms resolved
anywhere from 5 days to 3 weeks. Have your husband talk to his doctor
before stopping Norvasc on his own.

There are also several medical conditions that can cause gynecomastia, such
as prolactinomas and Cushing's syndrome.

Good luck.

Ah heck, I'll throw my $0.02 in as well.

My money is on the Zocor as the cause if it is one of the medications.

Since my buck seems to be worth a helluva lot more .. I think I will throw it
in too..

The recent Framington heart study has shown the chances of being anemic when
one is older is very low .. BUT the chances of being in a state of iron excess
is very HIGH.

Gynecomastia is one of the presenting symptoms of iron overload and is treated
by the removal of this elevated iron in the body.

Who loves ya.
