There was a flurry of interest back in the 60s or so in the "observation" that
Meniere's patients tended to come from the same pool of people with elevated risk of heart disease. I recall seeing some data on an association between body fat and Meniere's, for instance. But that was before the days of "metabolic syndrome," and I doubt that insulin levels were monitored in any fashion while trying to understand the association. Of course, there's always the danger of having reverse causality at work: people with vertigo (at least) probably on average have lower activity levels, which could lead to hyperinsulinemia, especially with the usual diet high in refined starches. -- Jim Chinnis / Warrenton, Virginia, USA Want to discuss Meniere's? The otologist frequently sees patients with progressive sensorineural hearing loss, subjective aural tinnitus and vertigo with no apparent cause. Elevated blood lipids may be a cause of inner ear malfunction on a biochemical basis. To establish the true incidence of this condition, all new patients (4,251) seen during an eight-year period were evaluated; of these, 2,332 patients had complaints of inner ear disease. All had a complete neurotologic examination, appropriate audiometric and vestibular studies and imaging, and blood tests including lipid phenotype studies. Hyperlipoproteinemia was found in 120 patients (5.1%). Most patients were found to be overweight and had additional coexisting conditions such as diabetes mellitus. Treatment with vasodilators and a 500-calorie, high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet yielded improvement of symptoms in 83% of patients within five months of initiation of treatment. The causation matters. But the Pulec paper is not subject to my reverse
causality criticism. It does lack a control group, though, such as a group of similar patients treated with a low-fat, high carb diet. -- Jim Chinnis / Warrenton, Virginia, USA Want to discuss Meniere's? See http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MenieresDG |

There is a rare condition of hyperlipedemia in kids who get hearing loss
neurosensory. Some have had their hearing restored when the lipids were reduced. Murray Grossan, M.D. http://www.ent-consult.com http://www.hydromedonline.com |
