Default Accepting Panic/Anxiety diagnosis: at what point? (panic)

I had a few panic attacks at the ago of 20. So I stopped smoking, started to
eat well (no more junk food), I lost 10 pounds and then everything was fine
for 14 years (no pa in 14 years)

But apparently, it can come back (I had one tonite and a few other since
april). And this time I dont feel I can handle it myself.

Im on Day 2 with Paxil and I already want to quit. All the posts about the
withrawals symptoms are scaring me.

I really dont know what to do

Just because there are people who have bad withdrawals from some
medications, doesn't mean you will. Everybody has different reactions to
different medications. I presume your doctor prescribed Paxil for you, so
give it a try first, then decide. Even if for some reason, you were to come
off Paxil, it would be done under a doctors care and done gradually to avoid
withdrawal symptoms.

Some doctors like to push SSRI's instead of a benzo for many reasons. One of
them is they're "addictive". Both SSRI's and benzos cause dependency which
is why you have to slowly wean yourself off of them but I never heard anyone
calling Paxil, Celexa, Effexor, etc. addictive. That's part of all the
politics behind it as well, which is a huge issue to get into. I find
benzo's more effective than anti-depressants with far less side effects...

?

No it's not true. If it works in the first place it will continue too. Of
course you may have to up the dosage the first couple of months until you
find what you need. I've been taking the same dosage of Xanax for a year.

You may be better off with a med to take *as needed* (e.g. a
quick-acting benzo, Xanax or Ativan) as you don't have PA's very often.
Taking Paxil at this point is a bit like shooting a mosquito with a
cannon IMO. It is very well possible that you won't have any PA's
anymore or just a few. Should you have more *Cognitive Behavioural
Therapy* (CBT) is a very effective tool apart from the Xanax PRN or some
such. But at things stand it would be best to move on with your life,
have a Xanax to take *as needed* and forget about the whole thing if
possible or just accept an occasional attack.

Default Accepting Panic/Anxiety diagnosis: at what point? (withdrawal)

No, it's nonsense. It can work for decades at the same dose. Many
doctors won't prescribe benzos like Xanax because of the withdrawal
potential. If you would take Xanax *as needed* (seeing that your attacks
are rare) you would not become *dependent* on it and consequently have
no withdrawal problems (and dependence is not the same as *addiction*
like many peopple, unfortunately doctors among them, mistakenly
believe). What is really annoying is that they readily hand out SSRI's
like Paxil, like your doctor does too. I wish they would do their homework. Philip
