Default Back again (mc ment.) Long (miscarriage)

Hi everyone,

I used to lurk mostly around this group and alt.infertility about 6-7 years
ago. Back then, I was TTC with my now-ex-husband. The marriage fell apart,
long story, but now I am married to a wonderful man, and we are starting to
get assistance with IF.

I have PCOS, and have been lucky enough to have a great OB/Gyn who is very
into treating PCOS and doesn't think I'm a hypochodriac like my last doctor.
A little background: I've known I had PCOS for at least 8 years, ever since
I read about it. Only recently, when I found this doctor, has it really
been treated. I've been on Metformin for about 2 years now, and I lost 30
lbs. My periods finally did start getting regular, but about 6 months ago I
had my gallbladder out, and I stopped taking Met for a while. I've been
back on it for about 3 months now, but my periods are irregular again. I
haven't had one since early Oct. I know I'm not pg. I had a miscarriage a
year ago. It was early, I would have thought it was just a heavy period if
I wasn't always taking pg tests.

For the past 2 years we've been trying, but not with any medical
intervention. We are ready to start now. I'm 31, DH is 30. He had a SA
done, and the results weren't too good. I was told them over the phone, and
the only number I remember is the count was 4 million. This was done thru
my Ob/Gyn's office, so they referred him to a urologist. We have an appt
with him in a few weeks. As for me, my Ob/Gyn wanted to have me do one
month of BC pills, then Clomid the next cycle. She said there have been
good results of women with PCOS reacting better to the Clomid after having a
BC pill cycle. When I was with my ex-husband, I did 6 cycles of Clomid with
no luck. I wonder if now, given my DH's situation, if we should go right to
IVF? I was so hoping we wouldn't have to do anything except maybe Clomid.

Sorry this got so long. I don't really have anyone I can talk to about
this. It was bad enough knowing that I had IF problems, but now DH does too.
It feels so overwhelming. What great news to get right before Christmas.

Hi Kelly,

I have bad PCOS and this was true for me. I always responded better
after 2-3 mos on BCP, followed by 150mg/day of Clomid combined with injectibles.

Is it possible your dosage wasn't high enough? I did not respond
until I was upped to 150mg. 50mg and 100mg did *nothing*.

Sorry you are here again, but welcome. Only your DH's urologist can
tell you whether or not your DH's problems are severe enough to
warrant treatment, and if "lower tech" IF treaments will work for the
two of you. If his only problem is low count, you may want to do IUI,
and skip regular BD for insemination.

I know how disheartening it is to hear such news, and hearing it close
to the Holidays stinks. Hope we can be a support for you, here,
if/when you need us.

Hugs,
-L.

If it helps, my husband's urologist suggested that even though 20 million is
considered a good count, and 10 million is low, that a count of 5 million or
more is substantial enough for IUI. Depending on the motility count, an even
lower count could be successful.
