Default Book Review

I've been reading a real interesting book on depression. In fact out
of all the depression books I've read this one has been the most
effective. I actually relate to all the things the person is saying
and can really see myself in the descriptions. It focuses on concrete
things we can do to deal with our depression and how to change
behaviours and thinking. It gives a good description of depression and
outside influences like depression w/ children, w/ marriage/ with
work/ with divorce, etc.

I have yet to apply any of the methods which are real simple like
tracking your moods and what you consider "normal" thinking and
concrete ways to change your behaviour towards procrastination etc.
Actually the procrastination part was a real eye opener for me as I
realized that I do use it as a way of self-harm and keeping myself in
my depression.

Anyway, I just found the book to be a great read. YMMV of course.

Its called "Undoing Depression: What Therapy Doesn't Teach You and
Medication Can't Give You" by Richard O'Connor, Ph.D

I think the fact that the authour has had deep depression makes it
easier and they don't put down any forms of therapy but just suggest
things that you can do besides therapy. There is even good
instructions on what to look for in a therapist, etc.

Thank goodness for libraries I must say. It lets me try out books and
not have to buy the idiot ones.

X-No-Archive: Yes

Hi BC, I appreciate this report. I think I'll go to Barnes N Noble and
check it out. I think I will also *look* at Dr. Phil's new book having
to do with obesity.

You might want to check your library to see if they have Dr.Phils
book. You'll probably be put on a waiting list but then at least you
can try it out before buying. I do that with a lot of self-help books
and diet books. I hate to waste money on what ends up being some
simple crappy thing.

Good advice! I need to get used to going to the library. My Dad always
goes to the library and never buys books.

I use the library a lot since I can now request books online. So when
I hear of a good book on a ng, or tv I can just go and put my name
down for it no matter what time of the day.
