Default CURE FOR PROSTATE CANCER SHOWS 90 PC SUCCESS (cancer prostate prostate cancer)

Cure for prostate cancer show 90 pc success

Sydney - Trials here of a new treatment for prostate
cancer have shown it has a 90 per cent success rate after
three years of follow-up tests and minimal side effects,
an Australian-US research team has announced.

The treatment, in which 'brachytherapy' is combined with
radiation therapy, was pioneered by doctors at St
Vincent's hospital in Sydney, developed in the United
States and tested successfully in an Australian trial
involving 82 patients with intermediate to high-risk
disease.

The results, showing it is technically and clinically
feasible as a definitive treatment for localised prostate
cancer, were published in the latest edition of the
Australasian Radiology Journal.

It is considered most suitable for patients with an
aggressive cancer which has not responded to more
conventional treatments.

"Combination high dose rate brachytherapy (HDRB) and
external beam radiation therapy is technically and
clinically feasible as definitive treatment for localised
prostate cancer," the team said. "With a follow-up
treatment of three years, complications were low and
overall prostate-specific antigen progression-free
survival was 91 per cent," said team at the American
Society for The****utic Radiology and Oncology. It found
that the delivery of radiation through the HDRB component
shortened overall treatment time and was both
biologically and logistically advantageous.

"As a radiation boost strategy, HDRB is easy to learn and
could be introduced into most facilities with
brachytherapy capability," the journal said.

Note that it is the journalists that translates such tentative medical
opinion into a "CURE".. It probably is for many, but three years is
nowhere near long enough to assess final outcome with this cancer.
