Hi Robert,

I was taking (1 gram) IV Solu-Medrol monthly also, and ohhhh, the horrible
taste! When the shortage came about I was also put on Dex.. and you are
absolutely correct, no nasty taste! I see my Neuro in Nashville this
Thursday (the 24th) and I'm hoping he will keep me on the Dex too. I didn't
notice that it was a lower dosage however. Will have to check into that
one.

I'm getting close to the end of being able to use the Novantrone. I've been
on it since September of 2000, he lowered the dosage after I'd been on it
for a bit over a year to stretch out the time I could take it. I'm past due
for my current round of it, but will get it after I see him on Thursday.

Wonder what the next "wonder drug" will be once we can't take the Novantrone
any longer.

<< Well, I don't need to tell anyone who has ever had a steroid IV about
that wonderful taste that accompanies the drug >>

Never had that bad taste in my mouth.

Are you afraid that for it to be effective, it has to taste bad? A bitter pill
theory of life?

My doctor told me a couple of treatments ago, when I asked him this same
question, that there is at least one and possibly more meds in the
testing phase that are "Novantrone-like" but without the cardiotoxicity.
Hopefully, when the full dose of Novantrone is reached there will be an
alternative that is effective and even less toxic allowing longer use.

I'm hoping there will be even more alternatives over time.

Default For Novantrone users (isolation down)

for combatting the metallic taste of solumedrol,, i would bring lots of
lifesavers-butter rum, and at the ambulatory care ward in langley hospital
they serve apple juice or orange juice,, or if you are staying long and at
the right time,, you can down a plate of lunch too

i love the semi newish ambulatory care ward,, they have 6 long soft beds for
us to use,, open airy quiet section,,
my first few roid treatments were in the emerg ward,, sittin upright in a
chair in the waiting room,, with iv in my arm and people sneezin and coughin
beside me,,

it totally ****ed,, especially since the reason i was there was from leg
paralysis,, they would wheel me into emerg and i had to sit,, while legs
throbbed,,

now i go in and its quiet,, and peacefull, and 1 or 2 nurses attend you,,
not 1 new one every minute!!!

i usually just go to sleep and enjoy the peace,, but since my mom just
retired,, august 19 formally, from that hospital, all the other nurses know
me,, and they usually come over and say hello,, nurses have an intercom to
use just for gossip,, to every room and floor of hospital@!!!! , so when we
had our kids there,, they called my mom,, since the nurse who helped deliver
the first one had just gone on vacation to vegas with my mom,, ,,, no way we
can hide at that hospital,, but the good thing is the 1% better attention
from nurses who know your mom, cause they work with her,, and my mom trained
many of the nurses there,, as well she started the BCNU back in 1982, when
nurses made less than safeway checkout girls or construction traffic sign
holders!!!

they give all people great care but their friends get just a little extra
bonus,, like- move me from this room cause this guy is yelling to much!!!!,
, my last overnight stay at emerg in december,i got to sleep in the
isolation room cause the emerg room was filled and it was loud,, my moms
friend moved my bed way to the back of the emerg room, in an isolation room
and shut the door!!!!
awesome!!!! i got to rest,, they did check me regular for blood tests etc.
having a mom who is old school nurse!!-wears an old school nurse cap!!.. is
awesome,,
when my friends have a baby and all others have to leave,, i just get my mom
to come and take me to the baby ward which is always locked!!!! she gets me
buzzed in to see my friends after 8pm visiting time ends!!!!

Novantrone never gave me the bad taste, the Solu-Medrol did. That is why
I'm glad for the Decadron, no bad taste at all. ) Novantrone only made
me pee blue! *smirk*

Yes, of course, it is the Solumedrol that gives the bad taste, not the
Novantrone. I just wanted to give my 2 cents that Halls Extra-Strength works
great to get rid of the metalic taste.

Cheers!

Thanks Mike! I'll keep that tip in mind and give it a try! *ANYTHING* to
get that metallic taste is worth trying!
