Default Going on vacation, need laxative. Long bus rides.

Hello,

I need some help. I have chronic IBS-D. I hate it, I feel like I
always have to go to th restroom at inopportune times.

But in my day-to-day life, I have a routine and I am managing. I
started taking Metamucil at night. I get up early and usually have
3-5 bowel movements in the morning. I feel like I've emptied
everything out, and I'm fine for the rest of the day.

Every once and a while, if my routine is disturbed - I take Metamucil
at night, but don't go in the morning. Then later on, I'll have an
emergency on my hands and have to run for the restroom.

Well, my routine is about to get distrurbed. I am about to go on a
trip to Greece and Turkey. It's going to involve some long (5+ hour)
bus rides. There won't be a toilet on the bus, and it'll be
impossible to get off. Apparently, they stop every 2 hours for a
bathroom break. It's my nightmare situation.

In the past, I have taken copius amounts of Immodium whenever I
travel. It works, but it makes me thirsty and sometimes I get
headaches. I'll bring immodium with me, but I would rather empty my
bowels in the morning and feel less stressed the rest of the day.

Any suggestions? Does anyone else have a way of handling this type of
IBS?

Thanks,

Speedy Zee

Hi Speedy Zee
You have the same problems/thoughts/fears as I do. I feel safe in my
own routine and environment. I envy people who travel and my first
thought is always - toilet!!! But others dont seem to understand that.
I dont have an answer for you - but just wanted to acknowledge that I
know where you are coming from on this matter. I too would be
interested in anyone elses ideas. All I can say is, if no other ideas
come your way - stick with the Immodium because you dont want to miss
out on living your life! Have a great trip!

Hi Janette
I have the same problem as you and Speedy Zee do. It seems no one
understands what we go through. I think it was William that mentioned
Calcium. I haven't tried it yet, have you tried it?

Default Going on vacation, need laxative. Long bus rides. (calcium electrolytes colon potassium)

This would be in line with my own personal supposition that the colon
should be treated like any other muscular system, with lots of
electrolytes (calcium, potassium, etc) and water.

I heard Caltrate D supplements. This all does make a lot of sense
because doctors say Calcium is good for the colon.
