Default Has anyone else here failed miserably at the idea of 'dietfor health?'

bigchickgal <bigchickgal@yahoo.ca> quoth:

Man, do I ever relate! I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in January,
and I've been low-carbing ever since -- first very strenously, but later a
*little* more relaxed as I started "eating to my meter." Aside from all
the positive health results (good blood glucose control, decreased
fatigue, decreased GI problems), I've also lost 20 pounds since January.

I feel SO conflicted about it! On the one side there's my fat-accepting
self harrumphing about it, and on the other I'm pulling clothes back out
of the Goodwill box because I can fit into them again. What's a
fat-accepting girl to do? I'm delighted at the possibility that I might
get my waist back, but I judge myself unmercifully for being delighted.

OK, it's not *that* bad, but I feel like I have a dirty little very un-PC
secret, like I'm being co-opted. And when my clinician gets all happy at
seeing my weight drop, I hardly know how to respond to her. *sigh*

It's so good to know someone else can relate.

If anyone is looking for a sugar free drink (I noticed many people are diabetic or dislike sugary soft drinks on this list) then you have simply GOT to try sugar free lemonade by Kool-aid. OMG! I could drink this stuff by the GALLONS AND GALLONS - which I don't recommend you do because then you get vit C poisoning and have to spend hours in the loo. LOL! Anywho, I love this stuff and I just found it and thought people should try it. They must have re-done the recipe because I SWEAR it didn't used to be so good.

Hi Karen,
Here in the USA if you have medical insurance they will pay for meters if you
have been dxed with diabetes. I don't know how your medical coverage goes in
Australia.

In my experience, many family doctors don't even know how to progress with
diabetics. The fact that you were not told to monitor your glucose leads me to
believe you might have one of those :-)
I asked for referral to an endocrinologist, and I was happy I did. That doctor
takes this much more seriously. Many meters are free with the purchase of test
strips too. No one wants to have to test every day. But trust me, neuropathy is
very painful in the early stages and almost nothing helps the pain. You don't
want to have that later on. Tight control now leaves no complications later.

As for depressive episodes, you sound
like you would do well on something like Wellbutrin. It works on dopamine
receptors. It is the only antidepressant
that ever worked for me. The SSRI's didn't help me at all.

A word to the wise, orange juice will raise your blood sugar fast. It doesn't
have to be sweetened. Oranges have enough natural sugar to do it alone. I make
home made iced tea and sweeten with splenda and lemons. It tastes great. We
also have a diet soda here called Diet Rite cola that is sweetened with splenda
and it is the best tasting in my opinion.

Good luck! Lil

I'll bet they're sweetening it with Splenda now. Many people think
Splenda tastes great. Unfortunately, I've discovered that I can taste an
aftertaste with both Splenda and aspartame, just as I do with saccharine.
I don't with cyclamates, which I can get by mail from Canada, but I've
gotten some mysterious headaches after using them, so I'm a little leery
of using too much. *sigh* Thank goodness table sugar isn't the worst
carb on the block. I still put it in my morning tea, and in a few other
things where a small amount of it will make a big difference to the end
result. IMO, "sugar diabetes" (the old-fashioned name) should instead be
called "potato diabetes" or "white flour diabetes!"

Thanks for the tip! I like Crystal Lite's raspberry cooler too. It's kind of
tart but really good - and no sugar of course. Lil

Testify sister! I need to forward some of these to Jack, who has
terrible monitoring habits.--Eva

I am usually NOT a fan of aspartemen because I can taste it in even small amounts but, I'm telling you, this lemonade kool-aid is the cats' meow.

Nah, you'd be appalled by just how much hate there is in the world.
You've never heard of "shopping while black"? And my DH is
"mobility-impaired" and let me tell you, the world hates disabled
people. Even when trying to accomodate people there's still the feeling
that they ought to be grateful for the crumbs they get.

I grit my teeth when taking my kid to public swimming pools. I don't
hear anti-fat comments, oddly enough, but I can't remember the last time
I went to a pool and didn't hear a ****ager using anti-*** terms as
insults to peers. That's language I don't care for my kid to be exposed to.

Awww!

Just speaking for myself here: when I eat stuff like salads, fresh fruit
(yes, I dare to eat a peach...!), whole grains, and seafood, I know that
not only is my mouth happy, but the rest of me is happy too, because
it's getting what it needs.

When I eat chocolate, ice cream, and cake, my mouth is happy but the
rest of me is not.

Now think of each part of your body as a voting bloc. Are you going to
let the minority of your body win? <Very Big Grin>

And you know what? That Weight Watchers trick of dipping the salad in
dressing really works. I find that a few dips gives me the flavor but I
don't need it for every bite of my salad.

But drinking 10 glasses of water a day, whoa, if I did that I'd never
get any work done, I'd be in the loo all day. They found that
recommendation is bogus, anyway, that's total water, and most of the
food we eat is high in water, so if you're not starving, you can
probably get away with just what you're drinking when you're thirsty.

If it makes you feel better, I've been trying to eat healthier and my
weight is still the same, probably because I don't exercise.

In a fair and just world, you'd be able to get iced unsweetened Zinger
teas in convenience stores, instead of several varities of sugar
sweetened lemon tea. I don't mind a brand or two, but why do drinkers of
"brown lemonade" get several brand choices and people like me have to
go to Ohio to find unsweetened ice tea in bottles?
