High animal-fat diet can cause breast cancer

London - Recent studies carried out in the United States
and the United Kingdom point that a diet rich in animal
fats and high-fat dairy products raises the risk of
breast cancer, while regular, long term use of aspirin
brings down the risk of breast cancer, according to a
report in the British Medical Journal.

The first study from the United States showed that the
rate of breast cancer among pre-menopausal women was a
third higher in women eating high animal fats diet than
those who ate low animal fats diet.

"Diet during early adulthood may have a different impact
than later exposure," author Dr Eunyoung Cho, an
epidemiologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston
said.

The participants completed two questionnaires on how
often they ate particular foods and were asked about
intake of more than 100 different items of food in the
previous year. The results from the two questionnaires
were averaged, which could cut down the random error and
reflect long-term intake as relevant for chronic
diseases, including breast cancer.

A separate study found that the seven-day diary method of
measuring diet showed a significant relation between
intake of saturated fats and breast cancer. The results
depicted that the risk of breast cancer in the women in
the top fifth for saturated fat intake was twice that in
the women in the lowest group.

Regular use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like
ibuprofen spells good tidings by offering protection
against breast cancer in women aged 50 to 79. In a study
conducted by Dr Randall Harris at the Ohio State
University, it was found that about a third of the women
taking aspirin, at least twice a week for osteoarthritis
and chronic headaches, had a relative risk reduction of
nearly 50%, compared with women who seldom or never took
the drugs.
