Default How recent do letters of recommendation need to be?

How recent do letters of recommendation need to be? Is having a good
letter of recommendation that is, say, 3 or 4 years old acceptable?
The reason I am asking this question is:

I am about to finish two long term volunteer commitments (11 years and
3 years respectively) prior to heading abroad for a long needed
vacation and some overseas medical volunteer work. When I return I
plan to relocate to another state and finally start taking classes for
medical school. Due to the transient nature of the volunteer staff at
these organizations, I am afraid that when I finally do need a recent
letter of recommendation 3 to 4 years from now (when I am ready to
apply to medical school), few people will remember me nor the
contributions I have made to these groups. Therefore, I want to get
letters of recommendation now; however, such letters would be several
years old by the time I need to use them. Should I get them now or
wait? I would be disappointed to not get credit for my volunteer
work, especially since I put in 20 hours per week volunteering with
these groups.

Thanks in advance.

If you include current letters when you apply, I think that the other
letters that are 3 or 4 years old will be fine. If all of your letters were
this old, then I think there would be a problem.

No one reads these letters of recommendation. You have nothing to worry about.

I beg to differ with you. Rec letters are read very carefully.
It's fine to have a couple which are "old" but make sure the bulk of the
letters are recent, particularly those addressing your academic abilities.

Cheers,

Hi everybody,
I have some doubts if anyone can clear it please. I completed my
medical school in 2000 and was granted M.D. degree. I have cleared
USMLE STEP 1 and now preparing for step 2 and CSA. I am trying to
apply for 2005 match. My Question: -

Is it true that I will not be eligible for residency cuz I graduated
in 2000 and there will be 5 years gap between graduation and applying
for match 2005? I heard like that from lot of people…please
clear my doubts… I am really stressed out about it…Thank
you.
