I'd like to add that you should be on T3 as well, about 6 to 10% of the
T4. It's what the thyroid would produce and it's needed to get the
liver to convert the T4 to T3.

Default Coconut oil ??? (not spam) Re: HypOthyroid, Hashimotos and weight gain

Hey there, I get the about.thyroid.com newsletter and they always have
something about coconut oil on it. I am a woman on a budget though so I
have yet to try it. When they drop the price I might, but its very
expensive. I do know there is nothing better on earth for your hair than
pure coconut oil, but I can buy that already mixed in my shampoo, but as for
a diet supplement, maybe if I get any worse I will consider it without worry
on the cost...but it IS expensive...so if you use it let me know, and I will
give it more thought. but seeing how it is on the newsletter page all the
time about how it is good for hypos...there must be some merit to it.

Lots of people do just fine on T4 only.

I know plenty of people without thyroids (cancer survivors) who take T4 only
and function just fine. Some of us had Hashi's before surgery, too (though
we may not have known it). Some had Graves. Many had no other thyroid
problems. The only time we take T3 is when going off meds to prepare for a
scan or treatment, and also maybe for a week or two afterwards.

Apparently our livers do just fine converting T4 to T3.

<< If after some 18months on Thyroxine/ Synthyroid you still have lots of probs
then its likely you need T3

Do you feel it's wise to wait that long even if someone is having aches and
pains?

Many people don't do well on just T4 though and this is one of the
reasons why. The more t3 there is available the more the liver can
convert.

Are you on a high dose of T4? Cancer survivors are often on a high dose
(so I've read here) to suppress all thyroid function. More T4 would be
converted to T3 in the tissues if you are on a high dose of T4 and this
would provide the T3 the liver needs.

Unfortunately non cancer survivors don't get high doses so they do need
the T3.

I am so absent minded. I thought I had bookmarked
the link that showed the new thyroid test ranges -
but now can not find.

My last tsh test - my doc said was
"Normal" and it was 4. ? (four point something.)
so that is still not in the range.

pls post link to new tsh ranges!

tks!

Default attn Peepla ...Re: Coconut oil ??? (not spam) Re: HypOthyroid, Hashimotos and weight gain

I have checked around and all the local natural /health stores
here are out. One store had it but it was not even
safety sealed and was thick like Crisco or lard so I didnt
think that was what I needed.

I have seen a link on the web but I havent
checked - I imagine it is high- taking advantage
of everyone's interest now - since the WW mag article.

IF I try , I will post here. I have tried the smoothie that
was in the article- with coconut milk but I put lots
of pineapple in it cause the c.milk is VERY VERY high in calories.

take care

Well, I checked out a link and
I am not going to order because of

1. price
2. conditions under which the oil is processed
(looks like very unsanitary conditions from the photo)
3. Poor natives are making this stuff by hand - and then this
company/website is making a KILLING of it !
I highly doubt the poor villagers are making $65 - $95
per gallon on this.

4. The poor makers of the oil have to use a WATER BUFFALO
to get the stuff transported from their village to the warehouse!
ANd there are no roads.

I would love to know how much these people producing this c.oil
are getting paid.

Coconut oil is thick like Crisco or lard. I remember this from my days
20+ years ago working at a Taco Bell. Back then, all the tortilla
frying was done in house and with coconut oil. It was white with this
thick, creamy texture and I remember that it smelled wonderful. The
smell kinda reminded me of the sun tanning oils of the day with a
texture kinda like cocoa butter. My friend that work there with me and
I had always talked about using some on our skin as a tanning oil, but
never did. And this was back when they made cinnamon crispas. Large
flour tortilla were cut into wedges, deep fried, then sprinkled with
cinnamon-sugar. The coconut oil gave them such a great flavor, and sooo
good piping hot!!! Years ago when coconut oil was thought to be so bad
for you, I believe Taco Bell stopped frying all their tortillas with it.
And I think maybe now they have them shipped already fried and don't
do them in house?
