Default Level 1 vs Level 2: that is the question

Hi everyone,

I've been tasked with figuring out what to do with the MTs in my office
(currently 75-strong) and whether to keep our current configuration of level
1s and level 2s, which I greatly want to do. I'm wondering what you all
think of having levels of MTs vs everyone in one big pool. I'm thinking I
pretty much already know what the answer will be, but wanted to ask
nonetheless.

What do you feel are the pros and cons to having MT levels (level 1 vs level
2)?

What alternatives do we have if we don't have these levels, to still have
multiskilled staff?

Thanks, in advance, for your thoughts!

Shellie :-)

One pro is an incentive to improve quality to the point where an MT has
something to strive for - the next level. The higher level MT should be
able to work out of any work pool you have anyway.

There should be significant difference in levels of pay and incentives
(I'm not talking about 1/2 cpl) to go along with the different levels
and those who are at the lower levels should be incentivized to do
what's necessary to beome higher level and they should be given the
tools necessary to become a higher level MT.

For example, if level 1 are categorized that way because they can't do
certain dictation types or dictators accurately and therefore their
work is "cherry picked" to begin with, they shouldn't qualify for
production incentives, where level 2s should.

IOW, your level 1s should WANT to become level 2s.

If you don't differentiate by ability, then you get into QA problems
and the people you most want to keep happy (level 2s) get upset and
leave.

Right BUT the pay should reflect the difficulty. A good MT may be able to
transcribe Dr. Ispeakanodaenglish, but doing so at a penny more a line that
takes her longer due to the difficulty is no incentive. If I make 20 cpl for a
doctor that rephrases things 20 times and can't speak the language, I'm better
off at 7 cpl for a clear dictator who can be typed pedal to the metal.
