Link between stress and intestinal Blockage? (small intestine neuropathy ileostomy diabetes diabetic)
Hi--
Hi--
I have a question for us on alt.support.ostomy-----
I'm wondering if there is a link between stress and intestinal
Blockages? Any experiences, anyone?
For the second time now, in about 2 years, when I have gotten under
*very* extreme stress (in-laws), my ileostomy plumbing has ended up with a
bad blockage, ending me in the ER on the first one with a really bad
intestinal blockage.
I almost went to the ER about 4 AM last night---this morning, with a
fairly bad blockage, but luckily it finally cleared up. I was very close to
going, but massaged my stomach alot with my hands, moved positions to help
stomach intestinal movement, etc. You know--the stuff they taught us
ostomates to do, sometimes it helps, sometimes not.
I couldn't get on my elbows and knees in a hot shower, cause the shower
was all messed up with the lime calcium remover we had used earlier in the
day. A definite case of bad timing, as I really needed to use that method
last night..
My yelling in pain woke my wife up unfortunately. I kinda try to hide
it, so I don't bother people.
Previously, under a lot of stress, I ended up in the ER, and the X-rays
showed that I didn't have a blockage in the usual "food" sense, but that
they thought that my diabetes had caused the normal intestinal movement to
just plain stop. They said it looked like the Diabetic Neuropathy was not
letting the signal from my brain, get to the bottom of my stomach to cause
it to drain into the small intestine, plus part of the small intestine was
not getting the signal from my brain, to move food along (normal Perstalis
movement).
They said the films showed that I have 3 loops sewn into my intestines,
where they had sewn them up after the ileostomy, but they appeared not to be
full of food, but they seemed to be blocked. No movement. Man, was that
painful.
As usual, the blockages just plain stop me in my tracks. The Dr's say
when that happens, to get to the ER as very soon as possible, that even a
half hour wait with all the internal intestinal pressure, could make the
intestines rupture internally.
I've been in the ER before with blockages, but these latest ones seem to
be related to extreme stress conditions.
Anyone else seeing this kind ocause and effect with blockages?
Best--- :-)
