Default My Thanksgiving (heart job)

For all of you interested, I had a very nice time with the family that invited
me for Thanksgiving diner. My Catholic friend and I understand each other very
well. He is the source of the diner invitation. We both agree that the
Catholic leadership is a sorce of embarassment for all of the faithful. The
subject wasn't even brought up in the course of my visit.
My friend's girlfriend is the grandmother of the Marine Sniper. This young man
had to do a very difficult job in Iraq. His best friend stepped on a land mine
and was killed. He recieved a purple heart from a shrapnel wound from an
Iraqui grenade. He showed me his metal. We talked about the booby traps that
are killing so many G.I.s . What he told me amazed me. The Iraqis are using
garage door openers as the triggering device for the explosives. These radio
devices are produced in the United States by Radio Shack and shipped to Iraq by
sympathizers living here in this country. The people making the booby trap
bury it in the roadside. They give the radio activator to a 10 year old child
and disappear. When the American convoy passes, the child presses the button
and BANG!!!!!!!
The soldiers there are very anxious. Sometimes they shoot and ask questions
later. This can mean that a child can be playing a computer board game and can
be shot if he looks suspicious. My talks with this young man were cordial and
respectful. He is in the United States now. He may have to return to Iraq in
case things get nasty again.
Since peace has been declared, there are over 400 young soldiers who died.
That means that in over 400 homes there was not the type of happiness that I
encountered yesterday with this family. One more soldier died today. He was
from the 101st airborne. That's all.

Default My Thanksgiving (tourette)

'Twas 29 Nov 2003 00:00:37 GMT when all alt.support.tourette stood in awe
as fenisz@aol.com (Fenisz) uttered:

This is how we lost in Viet Nam. This is how the Russians lost in
Afghanistan. This is why the Israelis are doomed to lose. Soldiers must
be willing to risk their lives to win a war. This means they must risk
being killed by a child when they aren't sure that the child is the enemy.
Every time they kill an innocent, they create ten new enemy.

This is also how the Germans lost the WWII. Of course the mentality of the
Nazi government was of no help. After invading the Soviet Union, Stalin had
the Communists activate in Jugoslavia. They started killing individual
soldiers. The German soldiers under General Keitel took reprisal action and
killed civilians. In short time, every civilian wanted to kill a German.
There are no winners in this kind of war.

I think we (americans) who are not directly affected by the war (by
having a loved one there) tend to ignore what is going on.

Do you really think that?

Some of us agonize over it.

I stand by this word choice. If you have two opposing countries you have
enemies. If you have two opposing soldiers you have two enemy. Cf "fish"
v "fishes".

A lot of people are in a position where they cannot ignore the international
situation. Television has brought this war into our living rooms in real time.
The future will either make or break a president and form our future foreign
policy.

I was in the breakroom at work and someone was reading the paper and
made a comment about another attack in Iraq. There were 7 people and
3 of them said they did not keep up with it (or tried not to) because
it was too damn depressing. I know that is a small sample but it made
me wonder how many people really think like that? Sure, everyone agreed
it was sad, but the bury-your-head-in-the sand seemed to be their
theory.

At the time, i was still obsessively watching CNN and couldn't believe
they weren't.

So maybe a more accurate statement would be that many people who don't have a
loved one over there have chosen to remain ignorant of daily events because
they find it depressing.

Not quite the same as ignoring it, just for the sake of ignoring it. Although I
can see that it would be distressing to hear, especially if one had a loved one
over there.

Anyway, please don't think that no one cares, just because some people find it
too depressing to follow events closely. I'd venture to say that in itself is
an indication that even they care.

Sara

I don't think obsessive watching of CNN is quite the answer either, though.
