Default newbie - old guy - chronic ibs (down colon arthritis constipation)

Hello group

When I found this group by googling around, I was surprised to see so
few posts in it, seeing the large percentage of IBS sufferers in the
world :-(
I'm m.69.au and IBS rules my day. (colic and constipation)
However, after numerous "white knuckle" barium enemas dating back from
the '80s, plus several other "....scopies" , my Gastro-Enterologist,
slammed down the lid on his laptop computer, effecting closure for
him, and muttered..."you have mild diverticulae in the transverse,
descending and sigmoid colon, and you seem to be stressful and in need
of a good FART!.....here's a scrip for some Amitryptiline, and they
may help you....pay the receptionist on the way out" ($180.00).
Also my GP told me to get into the fibre and prescribed some granocol.

The Amitryptilyne worked but made me doughy-headed for the next day
and mostly useless for work. The fibre bloated me more. The granocol
helped a little.

As I have a few other pain causing ailments, like osteo-arthritis in
both feet, ankles and R knee, plus Peripheral Neuropathy in both feet
from Diabetes Type 2, I found something called Fiorinal
Anagesic-Relaxant in the chemist's (pharmacy) drugs.
This helps me get 5-6 hrs sleep, but during the week I only have
constipated motions even when using the Granocol.
An additional relaxant I use is also Atrobel (Hyoscine and Atropine).

Come Fridays, I have a "big night out" on Magnesium Oxide Colon
Cleanse to de-toxify my week's ac***ulation.

Anyone in this group have any pointers (no snake-oil please)?

Default newbie - old guy - chronic ibs (atropine codeine down constipation diarrhea)

The drugs you are taking are constipating: Fiorinal contains codeine and
hycosine and atropine (along with belladonna) are the main components of
Donnatol, a medicine prescribed to halt cramping and diarrhea (atropine
is also in Lotomil, another anti-diarrheal). While these drugs may help
with any cramping ('colic'), they'll just make the constipation much,
much worse. Much much much much much worse.

Fiber does work for most people with constipation, and most find that
starting with a small dose and gradually increasing the size over a few
weeks causes the least discomfort. Eating things like sweet potatoes is
helpful, too, if your diabetic management plan allows you to eat them.

I have the exact opposite problem and take a large amount of Lomotil to
attempt to slow things down, so I'm afraid I don't have any first-hand
experience with constipation, but I do know my antiperistalsis agents!

I'm aware of the Codiene content in Fiorinal but I DO have PAIN to
deal with from 3 sources by the time I'm ready for bed.
I'm not aware of any Hyoscine and Atropine (Belladonna) in Fiorinal.
The packet states:
Paracetemol 500mg
Codiene Phosphate 8mg
Doxylamine Succinate 5 mg

The Atrobel, I'll grant you does say it helps to dry up gastric fluid
secretion.
The bottle states:
Hyoscyamine Hydrobromide 92.5 microgram
Atropine Sulfate 13.5 microgram
Hyoscine Hydrobromide 9.9 microgram
(I'm told it's similar to Buscopan, which was originally prescribed
for me by a GP).

Seeing your condition is the opposite of mine and doesn't have so many
sources of pain to deal with, you haven't really offered me a viable
alternative.

Really, what I need, are suggestions from someone who mirrors my
condition, if such a being exists on this planet

Thanks again for re-iterating what others have told me from time to
time, but it was the the GPs and Pharmacists who suggested my current
medications.

Default newbie - old guy - chronic ibs (colon)

Oh and I forgot to add:

"Atrobel tablets are used for the treatment of pylorospasm", which is
a spasm of the colon and it can either cause retention of wind,
(colic), or diarrhoea.

You were complaining of constipation and listing off anticholinergic
medicines that you take. I wasn't offering you an alternative. I was
merely telling you that you you were self-medicating with drugs that
cause constipation. If you take anticholinergic drugs, espeically a
great many of them at your age, expect to be constipated.

As for what kind of pain I have to deal with, I didn't go into that as
it is irrelevant to your constipation, but just let's say I'd get down
on my hands and knees and weep with joy if my problems were so few in
number.
