'Obesity Levels May Effect Heart Disease Figures'
By Rod Minchin, Scottish Press Association Rising levels of obesity threaten to reverse the downward trends in heart disease and stroke, an academic said today. Professor Brian Walker said that high levels of obesity have led to a dramatic rise in the number of people with diabetes, high blood pressure and high fat levels in the blood. These health problem – known collectively as the metabolic syndrome – are set to slow the fall in the rate of heart disease in the UK. The University of Edinburgh academic, who is an expert in the body’s hormones, said that new drug treatments could be developed to treat this syndrome and prevent heart disease. He said that increasing the blood levels of steroid hormones called glucocorticoids can produce the metabolic syndrome. For example, patients taking high doses of steroids to combat inflammatory diseases such as asthma and arthritis, run an increased risk of heart disease. Patients with the metabolic syndrome show raised blood levels of the body’s own glucocorticoid, cortisol. Professor Walker, who is also a British Heart Foundation senior research fellow, said the research has discovered an enzyme that makes cortisol within the body’s fat and liver.
