Default OT: (Maybe) Dementia risk factors

I heard this on the local TV station early this morning. If you had a
relative with Alzhiemers (my father) and you have diabetes (I
do)....well, it ain't a good day.

Anyway, this is the only reference I could find to what I heard. I
guess it hasn't made it to the TV stations website yet:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Medical Condition May Increase Risk Of Dementia And Alzheimer's
Disease
The condition is called mild cognitive impairment and a new study
shows it's much more common than doctors thought.
The University of Pittsburgh study found 22 percent of seniors 75 and
older have mild cognitive impairment. That means memory is impaired,
but patients don't have dementia or Alzheimer's disease
But this impairment is now being considered a risk factor for both
diseases.
Researchers found the condition affects nearly 30 percent of people
over age 85.
Risk factors include diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood
pressure and depression.
What do they consider to be the symptoms of 'mild cognitive
impairment?" Not to make light of this, but there are plenty of days
where I feel I have a "mild cognitive impairment."
Or are they referring to what some people call "senility?" (the
non-Alzheimer's kind.)
Dana, I suspect by "diabetes" they mean "uncontrolled high blood glucose
levels." Diabetics are generally assumed not to be in tight control.
I get a little worried when I can't even think of words for everyday objects.
Yesterday I was reading the thread concerning Sean Connery. A little later I
was going to tell DH about it,but I couldn't remember Sean's name or even the
007 movies. Really scary at times.
I think that's pretty normal. Don't you find that the things that are
really important, like what you're making (jewelry wise) and what you're
going to sell it for, that those things stick?
I hear you, my father had dementia, whether Alzheimers or not is open
to question, however, I found some good news, sort of, made me think
anyway, I'm nearly 60, ( I think you are not far behind me ) , so at
least we are too old to develop premature Alzheimers.
I hope we have time on our side in the case of late onset dementia. http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsArticle.jhtml?type=healthNews&storyID=3660044&section=news
type of ribbon I'm using for some of the necklaces and could *not* remember the
word "chiffon" to save me.
Sharon,
I do this all the time, even when posting in newsgroups. Sometimes I have
a decent vocabulary, sometimes I'm lucky if I can get the idea across using
simple words. My father did it, my kids do it. I know the word will come
to me later. My parents/grandparents died young so I don't know my risk.
I do have a sense of humor about it, though. I'll just say things like,
"...you know, the guy who played the movie character from the Ian Fleming
books we all read surreptitiously in the 60's."
