Default Reflux Causing Choking/ Coughing After Eating

Hello Fellow Members:

One week before I am to meet with my surgeon for a FN surgery
consultation, I have developed this choking feeling after I eat a meal
or swallow a pill. I went to my ENT and he stated that It is probably
my reflux. Great...Now what do I do.....? Do I go ahead with the
surgery or or is this ailment treated first and then I have surgery. I
did have a barium swallow xray 2 months ago and was told that I have
significant reflux....like very high in the chest. Id like to hear from
Howard and those of you that have gone through this how you treated it
besides lifestyle changes (Tried that). My Gi made it sound like i have
to fix the throat problem before I have the FN surgery. But what
happens if they are one in the same?

Thanks,

Mike

Assuming that your coughing/choking is due to reflux, then it would be silly
for him to suggest that your pharyngeal symptoms would have to be cleared up
before anti-reflux surgery. Yes, if reflux is the cause, then stopping the
reflux would be the cure. Be aware that sometimes those posterior pharyngeal
symptoms such as hoarseness may take weeks or months to clear up after the
reflux is stopped - same is true of the "lump" sensation you feel in your
throat. But coughing and choking should stop right away.

Howard:

Thank you for your answer. At this point I cant wait to have the
surgery. I cant imagine that I would ever say that. But anything is
better then chocking feeling I get after eating.

Howard...If you recall, Mike was the powerlifter who posted not too long ago
about the nissen fundo surgery, and had concerns about his weight lifting.
BTW did you get a chance to check on any capable lap nissen surgeons in the
Baltimore area (John's Hopkin's or Univ of MD). You said you would when you
the time [just a reminder in case you may have forgot :-)].

I apologize for not getting on that, Pete. I did just get back from Haiti
on Sunday, but thanks for reminding me of my promise.

I had mentioned a 17 year old girl in Haiti that had been proposed to us has
having a hiatal hernia and acid reflux as a cause for her recurrent and
disabling mid-epigastric pain. This was based on an upper GI xray and EGD in
Port-au-Prince. The interpretation on both was "hiatal hernia" and "reflux".
I saw NO such evidence on the UGI films. She had been on a course of
high-dose PPI without any significant effect - something that did set off
alarm bells for me. We have no capability for pH testing in Haiti, so I
elected to repeat the EGD (THAT was a project in itself). It was entirely
normal. Nothing to even remotely suggest a hiatal hernia and certainly no
evidence of reflux. I subsequently had a long talk with her parents
(difficult to do through an interpreter - my Kreole is bad, and I don't
speak French at all). She's an overachiever with a tendency toward hysteria,
and we all concluded that these were emotional manifestations in this
adolescent girl.

Hi. My first post to this list. Been lurking for a short while.

So what is this "lump"? Along with my discovery that I have reflux, I
also recently discovered a "lump" in my throat (gave me wierd dreams
about swallowing a nail ). My personal lump I feel every time I
swallow now that I'm aware of it. My throat clearing seems to happen
mostly right after I eat or drink. But is the lump related to why I've
been constantly clearing my throat for the last 30 years or longer
(I'm 45)?

The "lump in throat" sensation and throat clearing can indeed be related to
posterior pharyngeal irritation from laryngeo-phyaryngeal reflux (LPR),
which is a subset of GERD.

Oh, yeah. Although I had "the sours" (miniregurgitations) as early
as age five (just after adenoids surgery), I started coughing after
eating at 30 and by 40, heartburn is a nonstop problem (though I keep
blaming smoking cigars since age 31 and cafeine pills since age 21)
which led to huge weight gain (80# after my mom died). And I
understand all those antacids can cause kidney stones. The other
thing is these problems got worse after I stopped drinking milk ca age
26 because my dad made fun of me. Who wudda guessed back then that
when I was 41 and he was 82 my dad wudda died of stomach cancer.
