Prescribing it 'outside the licensed indications...on
their own responsibility' seems to put doctors in an
awkward position, especially if the relatives of someone
allegedly harmed by either drug decides to go for legal redress.

The doc has to take full responsibility for the safety and efficacy of
a medicine prescribed outside its licensed indications. However, given
the lack of drugs licensed for use in children, there would be a great
number of kids with a wide variety of health problems going untreated
if they didn't. Not to mention adults.

In article <g3epmvs0vp8too9dkuilkkpq1trjd48l0g@4ax.com>,
11011@10011101100011.net says...

from what i've read about it it seems that there is definite cause for
doubt about whether the drug has actually caused the problems the people
say it has or if the problems were actually just a progression of psychy
symptoms or developmental stage problems that would have happened anyway.
the 'case' i read in the guardian seemed to describe what are symptoms of
mental illness that are experienced by some people and personally fwiw i
don't know how its possible to say that one person has those problems
because of the med and another because of illness, okay, so the symptoms
in some of the 'cases' went away after coming off meds - but that could
mean they just got past the stage naturally and that the meds weren't any
cause of their difficulties - after all, growing up is tough for most
people.

I find it interesting that 'mental health issues' seem to be getting more
attention in the press these days - and not just the unhelpful or ignorant
comments either, but useful thoughtful things like this report.

Yeah, but it makes a good story about evil pharmaceutical companies.Which
confirms the readers' prejudices and sells more newspapers. Nowadays that's
the only definition of 'good' that matters. Meanwhile, real illnesses get
trivialised, effective medication gets harder to obtain, and pharmaceutical
companies (who seem to employ some very committed and idealistic people at
laboratory level, despite being greedy and evil) find antidepressant
pharmaceuticals going the same way as contraception: toxic publicity and
unending litigation make it a no-go area for research and investment.

Well put. It's going to be tricky for the lawyers and medics to sort out
'the truth'. I hope the research people do continue to learn more about
our illnesses, and how to treat them.

I think that medication for babies and children is an area that needs a lot
more work.
