September Is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, a time of renewed hope for women who are looking for safe and effective treatment options. New data suggest that women can live longer and enjoy better quality of life despite having recurrent or relapsed disease. Innovative drug therapies demonstrate efficacy with relatively few side effects (i.e., less hair loss, minimal fatigue, fewer heart complications) Recent research sharpens focus on treatment strategies (e.g., combination chemotherapy, sequential therapy with single agents) New data demonstrating extended survival and improved quality of life in ovarian cancer will be presented at the largest international conference on cancer research, the 11th meeting of the Federation of European Cancer Societies (ECCO), Copenhagen, Denmark, Sept. 21-25. WHY: New treatments and ongoing research provide hope in light of what has been the most deadly form of gynecologic cancer: An estimated 25,000 American women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003 More than 14,000 American women will die from ovarian cancer in 2003 Roughly 75% of ovarian cancers are not diagnosed until the disease has reached advanced stages and is more difficult to treat Only about 50% of patients survive beyond five years WHO: Ortho Biotech is a resource that can connect you with ovarian cancer experts and patients who can provide perspective about this disease and the latest clinical research: Susana Campos, MD, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Katharine Kinderman, ovarian cancer patient advocate CONTACT: William Foster Ortho Biotech Products, LP 908-541-4068 WFoster@GPCUS.JNJ.COMsoetgen@senseihealth.com CONTACT: William Foster of Ortho Biotech Products, LP, +1-908-541-4068,WFoster@GPCUS.JNJ.COM; or Sarah Oetgen of SENSEI Health, +1-860-828-2044,soetgen@senseihealth.com, for Ortho Biotech Products, LP http://news.biocompare.com/newsstory.asp?id=14439 |
