Default Shoes (semi-rant, semi-not)

I don't know if this is a "fat" problem or just a "me" problem but I have
the *worst* time trying to find shoes that fit me. Then, once I find them,
I've worn them out in anywhere from two weeks to a year.

It's gotten to the point that I've started spending $20 on whatever pair of
useless tennies that I can find at Payless, because I know they won't last
very long anyway, and why bother spending money on a bad pair of shoes?

I visited the local "Specialty Wide Shoes" store, and found a pair that I
could at least wear to work and not get rude stares from my co-workers (I
have a letter from my doctor, to my supervisor, that requires her to let me
wear tennies to work because of all of my "various knee, ankle, and foot
problems). But I can't wear them for more than my 8-hour work day, and I
can't wear them for more than a few days in a row, otherwise I'm in pretty
unbearable pain. The kind of pain that even with my feet up, not touching
anything but the air we breathe, they hurt.

Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone have some solutions? I'd
be willing to pay for a good pair of shoes that I *know* is going to last at
least a year with normal wear.

Zarah,

I wear European shoes. Clarks, Mephisto, Dansko, Finn-Comfort (Germany),
etc. I usually pay $100 - $200 a pair. Euro shoes have a wider toe box and
are built for comfort. The styles are usually uni***, and I have bought
men's shoes before.

Luckily, we have a shoe store in my town (Austin, TX) where the staff
consults with podiatrists and they're up on common foot problems and how to
resolve them (they have great customer service, depending on who you get).
LOTS of BBW's shop there. So we're not alone. I have foot pain that comes
and goes....

Get to a podiatrist. I was able to solve my foot, leg and hip pain with
simple $30 inserts, but your problems might be harder to solve. In any
case, a podiatrist can figure this out.

Zarah saw Sally selling seashells by the seashore and told us all
about it on Thu, 31 Jul 2003 13:33:06 +0000 (UTC):

Ouch! I'd say to get thee to a podiatrist. You might be able to get
special foot supports to help solve your problems, or at least to find
out WHY you're having them. Don't let them say 'lose weight and you
won't have a problem' either... demand service and you ought to get
it.

If there's something 'wrong' with one part of your leg it throws your
entire balance off and causes stress on other parts, which equals
pain. I strained my neck last week (owie) and the second day I noticed
that it wasn't just my neck that was hurting - I was holding myself so
stiffly and awkwardly that the pain was spreading right down my back
as well. And when I sprained my ankle I was walking very awkwardly to
compensate and it made my knees ache... anyway, the point of this is -
see if you can find out the primary cause of your pain because it
might be fixable.

Hi Karen,
Yesterday I was rechecked for my achilles tendon and the doctor did put a heel
lift insert into the shoe with the problem foot.
That made walking feel remarkably better.

I recommend a podiatrist too. Mine is just great - easily the best doctor I
have. He doesn't only care about feet either. He takes the whole person into
account.
He trims toenails as I have neuropathy and can't feel anything so it's not
smart for me to do it. He also takes care of any calluses. I just love going as
my feet look so nice afterward. Lil

In addition to the other suggestions, I generally avoid wearing anything
other than my Birkenstocks, and I've had much less foot pain since I did
that.

Thanks, everyone, for all the good advice!

I *love* the Munro line. One of the best pairs of shoes I ever had were
Munro. In fact, in the process of unpacking boxes (horray for finally
getting my own apartment!) I found half of said pair of shoes and they still
fit! If only I could find the other shoe.... Anyway last time I went into
the local wide shoe place, I described them to the saleswoman and she knew
exactly which style I was talking about, and sadly they don't make that
style anymore.

I also found a nearly-new pair of Doc Martens sandals which I am slowly but
surely trying to break in. They're super cute and appropriate for both work
and play, thank goodness. The only problem, which is totally fixable with a
nice sharp tool, is that they're a bit long and I need to add holes to the
back strap.

I do plan on seeing my doctor about a referal, once finances settle down
enough that I can afford the copay. I'll keep everyone updated!
