Our campaign this year, entitled Fight For Your Rights: Protect Yourself has been airing shows, live specials, and do***entaries that focus on ***ual health and information regarding STI's. We have found that one of the most effective ways to drive home the importance of safer *** is by profiling young people who have experienced first-hand what it is like to contract an STI. We are currently looking for young people between the ages of 18-25 who have contracted Herpes through ***ual contact, and might be interested in discussing with us the possibility of being profiled in our show. All correspondence will remain confidential, and if you would like more information on the show, it's goals, and our past programming, please feel free to email me and I will provide you with as much information as I can. Christine has been a key supporter of Women In Government's "Challenge to Eliminate Cervical Cancer" campaign. She has spoken to our members, state legislatures and the media about her story and the opportunity to finally eliminate cervical cancer through new technologies such as HPV testing. For more information on Christine's tour, including locations and dates, please visit: http://www.popsmear.org Tour Information http://www.popsmear.org/yellowumbrella.html ********** Have you ever had an abnormal pap or "high risk" HPV test? You may be eligible to participate in up to two clinical research studies on cervical cancer prevention now being conducted at the Universities of California at Los Angeles and Irvine. This is a two phase study: first, we will test women with abnormal Pap tests for HPV infection and type their virus; second, women will be followed for up to six months and women who continue to test positive for HPV-16 infection may be eligible for a study to test whether women treated with a vaccine clear their infections faster than do women who receive placebo (sterile water). Participating in the screening study does not obligate you to participate in the vaccine trial, even if you are eligible. However, if you believe that you would never consider participating in such a trial, you are ineligible for the screening study. Otherwise, you may be eligible if you: · Are now 18 to 50 years old · Have had one or more abnormal Pap tests in the last 12 months · Have had one or more menstrual periods within the last year · Are not now pregnant or planning to become pregnant over this next year · Are not HIV infected · Have never tested positive for Tuberculosis by skin test (also called "PPD test") · Have not received BCG vaccination in your lifetime If you are interested in being evaluated for this study, you may call our office at 310-825-0803 to receive a confidential, preliminary screening evaluation over the phone. You will not be asked to provide any identifying information during the phone-screening interview. Please visit our website for more information on HPV: http://www.bol.ucla.edu/~hpvstudy You may also send us an email at: hpvstudy@ucla.edu. The IHA is a global association of patient support organizations and health professionals concerned about genital herpes. ~ IHA For more info: http://www.herpesalliance.org ********** The American Social Health Association has been your partner for personal health since 1914: The Herpes Resource Center needs your help - either by donating to the Resource Center or by renewing your subscription to their quarterly journal on HSV issues, the helper. The helper has undergone some changes in the past year, and now provides readers with more in depth coverage and diverse feature articles. Renewing your subscription to the helper will enable the Herpes Resource Center (HRC) to continue providing accurate and up-to-date information about herpes, to be a voice to increase public awareness through the mass media, and to be an advocate for responsible national policies for treatment and prevention. If you would like to order a subscription or simply make a donation check out the Herpes Resource Center Web Site. ~ ASHA For more info: http://www.ashastd.org/hrc/helpgrp1.html https://www.ashastd.org/cgi-bin/helper.pl https://www.ashastd.org/cgi-bin/donateherp.pl ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ HOT TOPICS AND ARTICLES OF INTEREST 1. Dear Family and Friends, I apologize that some of you are getting this for the 2nd time. With the wonderful world of computer I ran into some problem (can you imagine!) So I had to send this again. If you are REALLY mad, send me a e-mail and I will add 5 miles to my train schedule next week to make up for it. But this is a one time offer! (and it's going to cost you....probably a donation!) Get ready for some shocking news! I am training to walk a 26.2 mile MARATHON to benefit the American Stroke Association. We all knew I was crazy, so here is the actual proof! No, I haven't lost my mind! By joining the American Stroke Association's Train To End Stroke program, I have a coach, a team, training schedules, clinics, and a reason that makes this more than a personal goal. I am helping to raise funds for stroke research, education, and advocacy programs. My grandfather, Papa died of a stroke when I was very young, and my Nana had a mild stroke just last year. So as you can see, this isn't something that happens to "other people." The following are some stroke statistics of which you may not be aware... Every 45 seconds someone suffers a stroke Every 3.1 minutes someone dies of a stroke There are 4.4 million stroke survivors 29% of people who have strokes are under age 65. Over the course of the next 5 months, I will be walking and running hundreds of miles to prepare. I will also be busy raising thousands of dollars for the American Stroke Association. I am writing to ask for your support in this effort through your good thoughts and through your generous contribution to the American Stroke Association. I am excited about participating in this event on behalf of many who couldn' t even walk it due to a stroke. Please join me in reaching the finish line of my fundraising goal and helping end stroke. P.S. Although the marathon is not until January 2005, my plan is to have my fundraising goal met by October. Your tax-deductible contribution, sent as soon as possible, is greatly appreciated! Every dollar makes a difference toward stroke research and education. If your company has a matching gift program, please send me the matching gift form along with your check and potentially double your donation!
