Default SYSK -Very helpful for Newbies (written by NOJ) (dissociation)

Hello and welcome to ASD!

This aint the FAQ. Its the SYSK ( Stuff You Should Know )

SPOILERS:

A. Spoilers are a space between the beginning of your post and the main
text of your post. Spoilers are used for graphic descriptions of abuse or
***ual stuff, cursing, religious references, basically anything that
would be "triggering" to read. Spoilering is important because sometimes
ppl cant handle reading certain things, if you put in a spoiler, you give
them time decide if they can handle reading about your topic, and to
prepare themselves.

Spoilers are a big deal.

The way you do it is:

You put a brief note saying why you spoiler and then you add at least 10
but better yet 15 lines of space. Heres an example :

Spoilered for a demonstration.

2
3
4
5

See, if you scroll all the way back up to number one, then you cant see
this sentence from there. A spoiler ensures others safety and your
freedom, you can talk freely under a spoiler. You can use all the
triggering language and images you feel like under a spoiler. * ( see
feetnotes, there is a catch ) Be very very careful *not* to take off a
spoiler unless you are snipping out the spoilerable material!

SPLATTING:

It is recommended that unless you are spoilering you use SPLATS. A Splat
is when you take out all or some of the vowels from upsetting words. It
is recommended that unless you are spoilering you use SPLATS.One reason
is that its easier for people who get scared by cursewords to read
splats. Littles, especially, have an easier time with splats. Some
littles cant even read splatted things. Another thing about splats is
that it is possible for people to search with a "search engine" for
places or posts where certain key words are common. If that person chose
the Keywords r*pe and s*x, they wont find *my* post cause it is splatted.
I think it is a good thing if they don't find my post, or asd. So I splat
some things, and I really recommend you do too.

TRIGGERS:

Many, Many, of the people who make up the population of asdis are people
who have been *heavily* abused as children, as well as far into
adulthood. When a person is "triggered" they are reminded so forcefully
of their past abusers that in some cases they end up re-experiencing a
piece of a past trauma, or feeling the way they felt when they were
*being* traumatised.

You do not want to do this to people.

So you try to avoid setting off "known" or common triggers in public
postings on asd. One of the ways you do this is by getting a sense of
where triggers usually are, and being careful to not use triggering
language. However, supposing ( and this will happen ) that what you have
to talk about cannot reasonably be considered non-triggering, nor can it
be expressed without triggering language, you spoiler for it, describe
nongraphically the types of triggers, and you let yourself loose under
the spoiler. A spoiler ensures others safety and your freedom, you can
talk freely under a spoiler. You can use all the triggering language and
images you feel like under a spoiler. * ( see feetnotes, there is a catch
)

KNOWN TRIGGERS:

Cursing: people are frequently cursed at while they are being abused and
most curses are ***ual or religious so right there its a set of triggers.

Religious acts/phrases/d*eties: Many people here were assaulted in the
name of chr*stianity or s*tanism or whatever other r*ligions you can
think of. You want to be very careful. While you might know of no phrase
so innocous and good as "bl*ss you" another person might have experienced
that phrase in a context where it meant they were about to be beaten, or
worse. Be very sensitive, okay?

***: well, a lotta folks here been r*ped and m*lested. Be aware of that.
Jokes about s*x with children are right out. Not funny, don't try.
G*nitals, slang terms, whatever, be careful.

Race: This rarely comes up, but racial slurs are not okay, and if you've
got a problem with people of other colors or religions, don't bring it
here. If you do, spoiler and then duck.

Holidays: This is tricky. Lets just say certain very unfreindly people
like to use certain holidays as occasions to hurt others. So, during the
various holiday seasons, be aware that some folks don't have happy
memories of Xmas, or their birthdays. As in dont send the group a big
greeting card on a holiday, at least not without a spoiler, or it will
have an opposite effect to the one you intend.

STANDARD NETIQUETTE:

Another thing you should know is that if you write in ALL CAPS ppl will
take that as you shouting. If you want to _emphasise_ what you are about
to ~say~ there are a numbers of *ways* to do it that dontinvolve CAPS

Those kind of pictures are helpful because on the internet noone can
hear you smile The little pictures are called "smileys" and
"emoticons".

If you quote somebody its important to "attribute" that quote. Some
puters do it automatically, some dont. If you are reading a post and
there are little arrow thingys like:

then dont take em off, they tell ppl whos talking. A well attributed post
might look like this:

Jojo the Dogface Boy @ix.netbomb.com wrote:

And then as they went along the little arrows would indicate whos who

NET AND ASDIS SLANG:

The conversation above would count as a *flame*, cause they are attacking
each other, and could well escalate into a *flamewar*. Flames are not a
good idea, and should be avoided. Try and work things out with people, or
express your own feelings, instead of telling ppl that they are big
dodoes. If you cant manage that, at least spoiler.

Flamewars are even worse.

*Crossposts* are when send your post to more than one newsgroup Because
of asdis's various customs and conventions, its recommended that you do
not crosspost, as replies from people in other newsgroups may be
unspoilered, unsplatted, and generally insensitive. If you want to send
the same post to different newsgroups, use cut'n'paste to make several
different copies rather than crossposting.

*Spam* is when you post the same thing to many newsgroups. They don't like
it.

A good rule of thumb is that if you are crossposting something to more than
five newsgroups, thats *spam*.

some common abbreviations:

IMO is In My Opinion

IMHO is In My Humble Opinion FWIW is For What Its Worth

OTOH is On The Other Hand ROTFL is Rolling On The Floor Laughing

Bc is Because STBA is Sullen ****age B*tch Alter ( a pride term for some )

Ppl are people. AFAIK is As Far As I Know

TIA is Thanks In Advance LOL is Laughing Out Loud

Perp is short for "perpetrator" or abuser. A Little is a child alter An
Alter is short for Alternate and is another you. You dont have to use the
word Alter, you can invent your own term or say Parts or Peices or
whatever slang is in vogue

info for those who can "surf the web":

Theres this thing they call a FAQ and its huge and informative and you
can get it offa the web. Try using the or alta vista search engines to
look for the alt.support.dissociation FAQ. It comes in several parts and
answers all those technical questions about what label gets pasted on
who. But very few people care about the labels or your exact pinpoint
location in the "dissociative continuum" .

DejaNews is an amazing search engine, it is on the web, it searches for
posts for you, you enter certain words on a form, hit enter, and it
supplies you with posts that contain those words.

The web address for dejanews is

http://dejanews.com/

Alta Vista is a web search engine, you enter words onto a form and hit
enter, and it supplies you with the addresses of Web Pages with those words.

The web address for Alta Vista is

http://altavista.digital.com

If I knew *anything* about anon ( anonymous mail ) stuff I'd tell you.If
I knew how you could get on IRC ( thats chatroom stuff ) I'd prolly tell
you that *too*, but I dont. The great pink bunnies also known as astri
reposts an anon instruction thingy every once in a while, try getting
that offa dejanews too, using the words anon instructions and astri.

Okay now that you are well and truly frightened, relax. Everybody here
was a newbie once. Mistakes are understandable and understood.

You can post as much as you want, theres no height requirement, you can
definitely post "even if Im not multiple" cos this group is for all
dissociatives and their supporters.

Happy Happy Joy Joy!

Nation of Jackie

************************************************** *****************

P.S. Its better to post questions to the ng stead of me, cause Im unreliable
and Not In Charge; )

* Feetnotes: I did say that you can pretty much say anything you like
under a spoiler. The catch is that if you deliberately and viciously attack
another person on this ng....its not okay.
