Default Take it to the max

I have been trying to lose a little weight, and increase fitness by a
bit of cycling.

I do think that not smoking has helped with the aerobic abilities, and
have been trying to exercise in target areas - to get the most benefit
and so as not to *overtrain* and invite injury.

To help I have been using a Polar Heart Rate Monitor.

To get the most benefit I need to check my maximum heart rate!! There
are formulae for estimating this, and that works quite well, but best
to check......so

Tomorrow I go out to test it!!! And it is going to hurt ..... lololol
Oh well!

According to the formula it should be about 220 minus my age

This would be 177 (about to be 176)

In training so far I have not exceeded 165. But neither have I
tried....

Wish me luck - and if I don't post for a few days, send out search
parties :-)

with hope and heart

Wish you the very best, and the joy of the day!

Likely that many of us are a bit gun-shy to go in for physicals, and will be
rooting for you.

Hope you wear your helmet while cycling.

I aspire to being fit enough to be able to overtrain ;-)

quick Steve, hurry up and post, you know I'm not fit enough to cycle
all the way down to your place to look for you but I will if I have
to!

steveb <twigg2324@NOSPAMyahoo.co.uk> lifted the trapdoor, peered

Ok....I had a problem...

The test went well up to a point and I recorded 173

But my legs gave way long before my heart and lungs.....I think they
are still too fatigued for a meaningful test as I felt there was quite
a bit more to come.

The trouble is that if you push too hard against obvious fatigue, then
you will injure something....and that could take weeks to fix...

A steady 140 - 150 felt fine for a couple of miles....even today....so
I'll give it a few days and try again.

Getting your heart rate to hit 175 ish, even for a few seconds, feels
strangely exciting.....I'm beginning to join the rest of you and worry
about me!!!

For those interested, two ways to estimate your own maximums:

1. If you are over age 20......then 220 minus your age

2. 210 minus half your age, minus 5% body weight in pounds, plus 4
for men and 0 for women

For me, with a weight of 191lbs, 1. gives me 177, and 2. gives 182

steveb - still panting :-)
