Default Warning: harmful common additive in saline nasal sprays (mucous)

Wow, what can I say but thank you Dr. Grossman!

I've been using over the counter saline nasal sprays to battle severe
dryness and a near total shutdown/contriction of my nasal passages. I
was making progress and symptoms where lessening then all of a sudden
- BAM - things got much worse. I couldn't find a cause, but it seemed
certain that something i was doing different had triggered this
disastrous turn of events. I just could not for the life of me put my
finger on it.

Well, I started reading Dr. Grossman's fine web site at
http://www.ent-consult.com/index.html and he had an article on harmful
additives in nasal saline sprays. Bingo - I discovered that the new
bottle of saline nasal spray I had purchased was a different brand
than I'd been using and it contains an insidious additive - a
preservative called benzalkonium that has toxic effects on mucous
membranes and cilia. It certainly had disastrous effects on my
condition. It was absolutely stunning how much worse my symptoms
became.

Do yourself a huge favor if you use OTC saline nasal sprays and read
the good doctors write up at
http://www.ent-consult.com/salineadditives.html

At least once a week I see a patient whose ONLY problem is the use of spray
with benzalkonium. This is why the Breathe.ease XL contains no preservatives,
and is made fresh.

preservatives,

How about Morton's table salt and warm water ?

I'll have to check the ingredients.

Use canning salt, not table salt.

The CVS brand of saline that competes with Ocean Spray contains
benzalkonium.

Why don't they have to provide a warning on the bottle like Afrin does ?

Morton's is OK for most persons but it does contain silica and iodie. I prefer
that Kosher salt or canning salt be used.

Because the major rebound effect of Afrin is not due to Benzalkonium
preservative and it doesn't cause a rebound effect with saline solutions
available at pharmacies and grocery stores.
